Color challenged...please help
1 Attachment(s)
The time has come to attach my blocks, and I don't think I like the color of the light brown border here. I am passing the point of no return so I need to decide one way or the other.
I am not fond of the light Brown. It looks Gold to me and feels like it does not fit. All of the outside border is supposed to be the multi color that is on the bottom and both sides. The border around the smaller blocks is dark brown. Something is just off and I do not know what to change. What do you think of the light Brown? Or any of the colors....what would you change? Opinions needed, please |
I love all your fabrics except the light brown .You are right that it doesn't work, and the reason is that almost all of your colors are cool. Brown is neutral but feels/reads warm. The black sets off the cool tones. I would audition a shade of purple (like your magenta flower) or a blue that matches the blue flowers. I'm leaning toward blue since you have the fewest blue flowers in the print--it would bring out that blue and look vibrant against the black and your rainbowish border.

I agree about the light brown. I copied your pic and auditioned a few colors for you here it is.

I think I would go white, more like the background of the floral print.
I would go with either the red or the blue that is in the print. The red would talk to your border fabric.
I like one of the purples, but the red or blue would be nice too.
I'm probably leaning toward purple now because I'm in the process of making my sandwich and will start quilting tomorrow on a blue/purple dresden plate king for my brother/SIL. She picked out the colors. Not sure what my brother's going to think with all the purple when I gift it Christmas. |
I like the dark blue, it brings out the blue flowers in all that white and pink.
I prefer the colour that is between the brown and the white; on my screen it looks like a lilac or grey.
Don't like the brownish fabric either. It doesn't bridge the center to the black. If you use the raspberry or blue/purple, you have a cleaner transition. The brown is just too washed out.
Thank you to each and every one of you for your thoughtful comments. I am relieved to know others agree that it just doesn't look good. I have put this project on hold until I can get to the fabric store for something else. I think either the light violet or the blue will look really nice...but will try out the red and dark purple also. I will post a picture of the "amended" look once purchased. Again, thanks very much!!!

It is the free photo editing that came w/ the computer, paint is what it is called. You choose a color and a paint brush size and can fill in any color you want anywhere in the picture.

That is an awesome tool to use and try out different colors!!! I tried to "edit" my photo and I do not see where I have the ability to do that. Would you share how you accomplished that? And thanks for doing it...I like the blue and the light violet the best!!!

If you changed the long brown strip on the left to the black/dark brown, it would take focus off the light brown which wouldn't look so out of place.
I would go with a medium blue.
Once you choose your colour, I would make it a narrow stop border rather than the same width as your black sashings.
I'm going to buck the trend and say lemon yellow, matching the yellow flowers.
I agree that the brown does not enhance it- and to me it looks goldish- I love those flowers- my choice would be the darker blue.
I'm for blue also. Isn't it wonderful to be able to get so many thoughtful opinions here on the QB.
I would take off the dark sashings on the blocks. Small print fabric looks best most of the time when it's floating so a border of the same color as the background would be my choice. Then frame that with a colored binding. To keep the squares of fabric interesting I would set them on point using the same background color fabric as he quilt.

Is the shaded ombre fabric going to be your outside border?
I can - sort of - see why you chose it - it does pick up the red, blue, and purple colors of the flowers. The following is MY opinion only: I think the ombre looks very "heavy" and "grubby/murky" compared to the freshness and lightness of the floral print - which I like. The outside border print makes me think of sunsets reflecting off dark water. I also think the black (?) or is it dark brown (?) framing the out side squares is "heavy" with the floral print. If I block off the dark framed squares and the ombre border fabric, the tan/gold looks better to me than the black or border print - because it is "lighter" feeling and the tone is closer to what the flowers are. If it was mine, I think I might consider using some green that is similar to the darker green tones in the floral print - that would "anchor" the floral print and still not look "heavy" or "murky" What were your thoughts for the binding? Again - only my opinion. I don't know how much fabric you have available - or your thoughts on a total reworking of the project. Bottom line - to me, the gold/tan (by itself) looks good with the floral print. Or possibly, replace the gold with a green, and replace the black with the tan/gold, and find something else for the outside border. I do like the floral print. It's bright, cheerful, and fresh looking. |

I agree, I like the idea of a yellow, it would look nice with the brown |
I agree about the brown, itjust does not work. I would try to find a blue that would compliment both the flowers in the print and the blue in the outer border fabric. If you don't have something in your stash, then be sure to take your project with you shopping!! Blues can be deceiving.

I vote for the lilac one!
Anything but the brown! That beautiful, flowery fabric deserves to be surrounded with a happy color that brings out all the other colors. Good luck.
I think sage green would be "safe" but I'd chose periwinkle blue. Great fabric, btw.
There's a folded quilt peeking out behind the one in question. Do you have more/enough of the yellow that I see on that one? I'm partial to blue but it would need to be the "right" blue to look good on this quilt just as just the right brown/yellow that you've opted to change.
I like the grey(?) or dark blue but definitely not the brown.
I think it is because so many of the other pieces are dark (the very dark brown, the deep jewels, the bright flowers) it makes the light brown seem out of place. Perhaps a darker brown tone on tone or small print to break up the solid. But something quite a bit darker.

I think just removing the light brown and using all dark brown will be striking and the floral fabric with the dark brown is unusual and striking. Very pretty.
