Our 8th grandchild is due the end of July. I've made quilts for all our grandkids but not before they were born. My DIL has picked out a cute Winnie the Pooh theme and bought a sheet for me to go by. I can envision Pooh as the focus fabric and 2 or 3 other fabrics as secondary fabrics. Should I find a pattern so I'll know how much fabrics to buy? Or, should I buy fabrics, then choose a pattern? I don't mind buying extra, as I could use extra to make a raggy quilt to sell. (What I'm making for my DGB will be traditional, though.) Hope my photo comes out; I'm not good at photos. I would appreciate any help.

That would be great in a warm wishes quilt!

I usually buy fabric, then decide on the pattern.

I usually start with the pattern. I need it to know how much fabric to buy.
i always have fabric and then comes the pattern
I always seem to buy fabric first..then comes the pattern.
fabric, then pattern. And I agonize over how to figure out a pattern that takes the amounts of fabric I have on hand.
What I have done in the past is pick my fabrics from my stash, then find a pattern. but I was wondering if I was doing this right?
thanks for all the advice. |
I would probably save money if I chose the pattern then the fabric, but I'd have less fun building my stash...

Fabric, then pattern.
If I see a pattern I (99%of the time) usually do it the same have a hard time changing fabric colors So for me pattern first then material ..All the fabric stash I have I bought because I like it with no plans and keeps growing...
Pattern first so I buy all coordinating fabric in the right yardage. This works for me!
Depends on which caught my eye first.
I made my cousin's baby an Eleanor Burns trip around the world quilt in Winnie the pooh fabrics, 1/2 yard each of six fabrics and it was wonderful (in their opinion too, not just MHO!). It worked up quickly and easily.

I started getting fabrics together for a king size quilt and then found a pattern and have been agonizing ever since whether I have enough of each fabric. Next time, it will be pattern first then the fabrics. My stash isn't big enough to "shop" in!
