Do try a wool batting much warmer than cotton. Think about using minke for the backing really really soft , plus it will have more warmth than a regular backing. Minke washes and wears really well. Its a bit pricey but for what youare looking for I think it may be worth it.

I'm sorry to hear about your uncle.
Several years ago my son wanted a quilt and I didn't have a lot of money so I made it using his old blue jeans and then used an old blanket for filler instead of batting. Talk about warm!

Thinking of your family and pray for good results. Do you need some actual LSU fabric - maybe to add a border? I can get some to you PDQ (If it's in stock here) Also, I used warm and natural once with a flannel back and it was almost too toasty for me. I check back often - so PM me if you want the LSU logo fabric and let me know how much you'll need.

PS You may want warm and white rather than warm and natural so the sig lines stay bright white.

I love the cuddly softness of wool...It's machine wash line dry and so very nice.. We made one for my father when he was dying of cancer. He loved it. The wool breathes and worked so well for him
