I dont have pictures yet but need to get info on these machines.
The Singer is a large commercial machine with a huge motor on it.
The Domestic is in an old metal and wood cabinet that has all the drawers missing.
These were left in a house my dauther just bought and they are buried under a mess of junk.

The commercial may be worth saving! Don't know too mmuch about them , but would love to see pictures.

BellaBoo 06-30-2009 06:15 AM

The commercial one would be great for sewing heavy fabrics. It would be great for making tote bags, pillows, and home dec from upholstery fabrics.

It surprised me that Singer made a commercial machine. It looks old. It is in a table so it sits flush and has a big wooden thing to put large threads on.

I may be able to help...Singer has a whole line of industrial machines...Straight stitch mostly...new ones start at about $700. They last forever with a little maintenence. If you try to tip the machine head towards the back of the machine, it may be sitting in a bed of oil. This is for lubricating the machine as it will work for 12 hours straight without stopping. It needs special needles(not the same as your home sewing machine needle), a special sewing machine oil that is sold by the quart and has a leather belt to run the machine/motor.
The model # is listed on the machine somewhere usually 3 #'s, a letter, a -, and then another 3 numbers.
Contact Singer for an instruction book once you have that info...
Good luck, Susie

Thank you.
It is not here but will be going to the house this weekend and will check it out some more.

If you check your phone book (larger cities) you should be able to find an industrial sewing machine repairman. They'll have you take in the head (unless there is a problem with the motor). I bought an industrial on ebay, and it was nearly frozen. The serviceman was able to wash it in kerosene to get it working again.

As a side note, I understand there are two kinds of motors, clutch and servo. The clutch motor runs all the time, and by pressing the foot pedal, you engage a clutch that runs the sewing machine.

The servo motor only runs when you press the foot pedal, and only as fast as you press the pedal.

I keep hoping my clutch motor will die so that I have an excuse to by a newer servo. The noise drives me nuts!!

What a find.

I would keep both....but I have been called a pack rat   I would love to have a heavy duty machine, even if I would not have a need to use it often, it would be nicer than trying to use one of my domestics.

mkanderson 07-02-2009 09:59 AM

My goodness!!!!!   That looks just like one that I sewed on for nearly 12 years, eight hours a day! I would love to have one at home! I loved the big thread stand on the back side of it. The table it is on looks like it too! We had big cones of thread and the one I sewed on the large thread stand would have one cone of thread on each stand and one was your top thread, the other one went to your bobbin

I agree -- what a find! It would be interesting to see how old they both are. Sounds like your daughter had/has a bit of work on her new home.

The house closed yesterday so we are going up today to start cleaning out the mess.
My dauthers boyfriend has contacted the local fire dept to do a control burn and burn the house down. It cant be saved.
There is years of stuff thrown all over the place. An older couple died and it was left as is, clothes and everything. It is a real mess. Black mold so it is dangerous.
I will get pictures of both machines and get the serial numbers. Kinda excited to see what else is buried under all that mess.

I worked in a sewing factory for 4 of the longest months of my life back in 1975. But I did learn how to put in a collar and sleeves without any pins, so it wasn't a total loss. This machine looks very much like the ones in the factory.

A control burn? That sounds awesome! Kinda like one of those implosions to demolish a building. Good luck with your treasure hunting.

If the table for the industrial machine is beyond use....a new table can be purchased for around $100. Install the motor and thread stand on the new table. Personally, I would have it done....Just too much hard work on that, in odd positions.....

pinkypig 07-06-2009 08:23 AM

I use one in my husband's business, sewing canvas for boat tops and vinyl cushions. They last forever, been using mine 15 years. can sew just about anything on the (straight stitch only) just change the size of the needle, great for hemming jeans. Getting used to the speed takes a little time. Great find!!

omak 07-06-2009 08:43 AM

And, if you look at the photo, don't we factory gals see an automatic bobbin winder? down toward the middle of the photo ... almost to the bottom ... has a cord running in front of it ...
Pack rat or not, I WOULD be saving both machines ... or, put a really good price on them and if they don't sell, you will know they were meant to be yours.

I have new pictures, lets see if it works

omak 07-06-2009 11:54 AM

I have never heard of a "Domestic" brand of sewing machine, but I wouldn't pass it up ... surely, you can find out something about it online.
As you look at the singer from the side the operator sits at, the lever in the middle under the machine is the one you hit with your knee to lift the feed dogs.
You push forward on the foot pedal/platform to make it sew, and tap the back end to cut the threads ...
A mechanic will get it going for you ....

The commercial machine looks exactly like the consew machine i used at work they are very nice to have especially if its a walking foot model wich from the pics it looks like it is. Chris

Rose Marie 07-06-2009 12:23 PM

Walking foot model? Does that mean it has a built in walking foot for quilting?
Thank you so much for all the info, you guys are always so knowledgeable.

Possibly...In order to use it for quilting you may have to change out the feed dogs for different ones that have finer teeth. and of course a lighter needle....By the way, The knee lift is for lifting the pressure foot, not lowering and raising the feed dogs...

Singer makes lots of things you wouldn't think they made. I worked at a Singer plant when I was 17 and we made Nuclear Power plant training simulators and Military flight simulators.

tlrnhi 07-06-2009 09:04 PM

WOW! What a find!
I would LOVE to go rummaging thru that house. I'm sure there are TONS of treasures to be found!
I'd do that BEFORE any burning goes on.

earthwalker 07-07-2009 12:00 AM

Definitely keepers....just think you could probably sew leather, sheepskin....the possibilities are endless. I would be buying masks and gloves and seeing what else gets unearthed. Magpie/Packrat/Fossiker Heaven!

Rose Marie 07-07-2009 07:42 AM

The place is discusting and dangerous. Spent two days just in the addition cleaning all the rats nests out. The refrigerator was full of food from 2 years ago.
Screwed the door shut and trashed it.
Black mold is everywhere. Wore masks and gloves. Anything that was worth alot was already removed that was why the place was so trashed. They just threw everything around mostly on the floor where the rats made nests.
We did find some nice things but they were filthy. I spent two hours cleaning a stainless steal Sunbeam mixer that was expensive.
Lots of finds but the only thing that might be worth alot is a pepsi can of the Michael Jackson family tour back in the 90's.
