Concept to Bleck ;)

Oh my beautiful little stack of Morris fabrics... This looked like a fun idea sew along from Fat Quarter Shope, only theirs was in blue and I didn't have any, and I messed with nearly all of the blocks :) and changed the setting. (35"x35")
But by the time I got to the borders today I knew it was destined for the back of something that wouldn't get turned over.
I've never seen anything so dull and unexciting. And I'm not digging for compliments, the peicing is impecable even though I used 3 different machines and up close my fussy cutting etc is great good fun to look at.
I can only say I'm glad I had the discipline to finish it :)

Care to share some of your disappointments?

bearisgray 01-30-2024 08:28 AM

What size are the blocks?

I do agree that the colors do not make me jump and down with excitement, but it would be easy to live with ( before everything gray ers)

Impeccable work. I think it depends on how you want to use the quilt. It isn’t showy and dazzling, but it is calming. If you don’t love it, someone else will.

I think it is a wonderful guilt and perfect for a man. Most men like earth colors. I started a log cabin using mostly brown/gold earth colors and It is boring to me but I can't say a failure so far but I wished I never started it.

Yeah that one doesn't call to me either, lol.
I think I've had 2 disappointments, both very early in my quilting journey. The first one was all plaids and I did NOT like the way it looked when it was done. Gave the top to a friend who quilts 30+ quilts a month for the pastoral program at one of our local hospitals. They give a quilt to every terminal patient. If you could read the thank-you notes from the families, that's what all of us would be doing with our quilts!

The second disappointment was because I had tried to exactly replicate a quilt from a book, but I had to use different fabrics. It didn't turn out the way I had envisioned, so I gave it to same friend to quilt for the pastoral program. She quilted it and brought it to show me. It was GORGEOUS. I was so mad at myself for giving it away. But what I learned from the experience: 1) Dissect the picture - is it the pattern I like, or is it the colors and fabrics? 2) Color relationships and placements inside the quilt are much more important than the fabric print. 3) Be patient with the process. If I'm not happy, set it aside for a while, quilt it, and it's possible I may fall in love all over again. I really wish I had a picture of that quilt.

Thank you for showing your take on https://www.fatquartershop.com/4-inc...ee-pdf-pattern
There is another one done from that pattern in blue. Did you enlarge the pattern or just add borders?

GingerK 01-30-2024 09:07 AM

Well, my sister would love your quilt. She is a very earth tones type person.

I have had many occasions where my final product was disappointingly different (and sometimes fantastically more) than my vision. I also pass on those 'small errors in judgement' to our guild's community quilts program. And I too, have been amazed at the quilted and bound 'silk purses' that have come from my 'pig's ears' donations.

I hope that I learn something from every top that I make. Even if I have a negative experience, it still contributes to my quilting journey.

yes WorkBench it was the Petit Four quilt along, I'd forgotten the name. It was just something to work on while we were traveling last year.
Bear, they were 4" blocks, 3.5" finished. It may grow on me but with my vision, the kaffe and poppy next to it is more my style now :)

Quiltwoman44 01-30-2024 10:00 AM

well sorry but I think it is lovely. love your fabrics. make it reversible and you've won twice!!

dunster 01-30-2024 10:10 AM

I wouldn't call it a failure at all, and I like earth tones. And it always amazes me how a quilt can become even more beautiful once it's quilted. That said, I wonder how it would have looked with black sashing. More dramatic?

My current disappointment is the Saturday Sampler I am in the process of quilting. First off, not a real fan of Samplers. Second the background fabric I chose to use (because it matched the blocks and I did not want to buy fabric for a quilt I already wasn't a fan of) is a older floral print. Now reason three is I am trying to quilt it in an allover motif and am not sure it's going to look good. I guess I will just press on and hope for the best. Will post a picture when I get it finished. BTW, I personally like your quilt. Someone else will too :)

bearisgray 01-30-2024 10:33 AM

3.5 inch finished?.? Yowza!

What do you use for seam allowances on those tiny blocks? And which way do you press them??

I do like it better in blues.

Lena1952 01-31-2024 04:45 AM

While not colors I am normally drawn to, I find this quilt to be quite stunning actually.

Stitchnripper 01-31-2024 04:55 AM

When I clicked it I thought you put the wrong picture in. I think it is stunning. I usually go for the Kaffe Fasset type of quilts but yours looks very beautiful to me.

KalamaQuilts...you may not be digging for compliments, but I'm giving you a BIG ONE!! I love it!!! I love the colors, I love the look of the quilt, it is just beautiful!! Don't you dare hide it on the back of something never to be seen! You've put a lot of work into this quilt and I see nothing to hide about it. I think you did a wonderful job and as I said, I do love the look and color of it...I REALLY DO!

I like your quilt! The colors are great. Even though blue is my favorite color, I really like the tans.
My disappointment was the only quilt pattern that I ever purchased. It was a square in a square. And an early photo quilt that had way too much negative space.(no pic) Also, my JR quilt was disappointing. I don't think I made it correctly.

KalamaQuilts 01-31-2024 08:11 AM

Well, all my quilts regardless of size are double sided and the biggest part of this one probably being a 'behinder' is my eyesight is failing. This year I've been making new quilts to hang on our loft rail above the living room. This one I can barely make out :) The oranges, reds, and greens are quite vibrant in the fabric, but when you get down to 1/4" and 1/2" wide pieces something gets lost in the translation I guess. The sashing on this one is cut at 1" to fit the scale of the blocks. Don't hate it, was just disappointed.

I've probably never met a quilt I didn't like, of all kinds :)

I was thinking a darker sashing, too. I mostly make my own patterns and have produced a fair amount of duds as a result. But my policy with bad quilts is to either take them apart and redo them or cut them up into gift bags so I don't have a lot of pictures. Here's two that I've got still laying around-

Don't know why I didn't think to put a boarder on this when I made it because it really needs one.

Originally a Christmas pattern, it was supposed to have BELIEVE appliqued on the black stripe but I never got around to it. It's been disassembled and is in the process of being tuned into a different quilt alltogether.

Lena1952 02-01-2024 04:25 AM

Polkweed, I personally don't think the hashtag quilt needs a border. I love it as is!

LI_diva 02-01-2024 04:44 AM

Another vote for I really like it!!

Whether garment or quilt sewing, and all the other crafts I dabble in, I always hate my projects when I finish them. Then I put them away and don’t look at them for several weeks/months. When I take them out again, I’m often surprised at how much I now like them. Instead of seeing all the little bits of work, I’m able to see the project as a whole, as it’s usually not as bad as I thought it was.

Maybe try that?

laurilli 02-03-2024 03:04 PM

Your work is amazing!! I agree with LI diva set it aside and maybe later you can love it

L'il Chickadee 02-06-2024 04:59 PM

Another vote for "I love it!" I find it very calm and restful, something to have on the wall in a reading nook or place where you go to unlax and you can look up and take it in at close range. I'd also say put it away for a few months before making any decisions.

I know what you mean about beautiful Morris fabrics. I love them too and look for special patterns to display them before I cut into them. I was excited about the Moda Morris selections that are around but when I look at them. Love the patterns, hate the colors. The rich color tones of burgundy, gold, and blues aren't there. All black and tans. You did a great job on this quilt even though it isn't what you planned. It's a beautiful quilt and someone you know will absolutely love it.
