Hello from Ohio. Cone shaped? As in like an ice cream cone?
Can you send pictures?

MamaBear61 08-19-2010 07:51 AM

Hello and welcome from Ontario. Hopefully someone here will have an answer.

poohstra 08-19-2010 08:38 AM

i don't have a picture but it's in the quilt magazine. it's not the icecream cone but i think it's made from that concept it's just the cone no top. i got the pattern and template. and like an idjit i cut the pieces and pinned but i can't figure out how to sew the the two rows together.

Can you tell us what magazine it is in? I am sure there are many people who have the same magazine and can help you out.

aug/sept 2010 Quilt Magazine' issue # 115
scrappy cone shapes.

Wow! I found this by googling, but I don't know if a link can be posted to a pdf. Looks like a fun quilt, but I have never done anythng where the strips that sewn together have curved edges. I am sure there are many people that have. Hopefully they will weigh in on this and help. I would be interested to hear the easiest way to do this.

Here's the link she was talking about. It looks cool. I may have to try this myself!

thats the link i got the template it shows a picture of how to piece it but does not tell me how to sew the two rows together. like turning the same face together or sew ontop of one to the other im so stumped and as i said i already cut out all the pieces needed to do the quilt. i pinned the first two rows then ran into sewing problems. i need the quilt by the end of next month and do not want to buy new material and find another pattern. i looked everywhere on the computor for help then turned here for more.

poohstra 08-19-2010 10:36 AM

ok maybe i went on quilt panick.. i did the pinning again just now and it seems to be working. i think i just panicked when i turned the rows together to sew and they didn't seem they would work that way. thought i needed more information to be able to finish it.

Quiltforme 08-19-2010 10:37 AM

It looks like once you sew them into rows. then you match the second row to the first right sides together. Matching the curves and intersections. Hope this helps It can be frustrating when the patterns do not make any sense. I am a visual learner and I ahve to commend you on doing this pattern!

Looking at the pic of the quilt, see where they have HALF a cone at the end of every other row? That will even out the rows.

Now, looking at the colored line drawing, where the TOP of two curves connect, that intersection will match the point of the cone in the bottom row.

So, I would cut out one cone, and put two rows together and see how this works for you.

Pinning is important here. Use pins to match up your "points" before you sew.

Hope the helps a little.

I am on one site where you can't post direct links to pdf file,s that is why I didn't know if you I could. Everyone has different rules. Thanks for answering the questions.

I think I would try making diamonds,
and then making diagonal rows of the diamonds,
and then sewing the diagonal rows together.

Like one does when sewing blocks on point together.

This is the method to go with for sure.

Yep, that is how I would do it too.
Was getting ready to post that when I saw your post.
Great minds think alike

poohstra 08-19-2010 03:11 PM

thank you all for the help i was going alittle crazy. i have stepped back taken a deep breath and started over, seems to be working.

Julie in NM 08-20-2010 03:31 AM

Bearsgray...you are SO right. Your way makes more sense and a heck of a lot easier!

bearisgray 08-20-2010 03:51 AM

I haven't actually DONE it - so I can't vouch for the practicality of my suggestion.

But I think it would be easier than the way shown on that other site.

My drawing could have been better, but I think I conveyed the idea.

And now I think of some refinements that I should/could have made to it. Oh,well.

What a great way to use scraps. thanks

it actually works just fine doing it by rows as the picture shows.
i was in a panick at first but once i started sewing it's working out wonderful and kinda easy.
