Cone thread - no stand

1 Attachment(s)
I'm staying with my DD for a couple of weeks and brought along some sewing. I use her machine but she has no cone stand for the thread I brought. Here's my solution. I thought others might find it useful in a pinch. It doesn't show in the picture but after it goes through the fork the thread goes around a spool pin. Then it threads as usual.

Thanks for the tip. Where there's a will there's a way!

Here's a better picture.

I did this when I went to visit my mom and had to use her sewing machine. Instead of a plastic fork I used a safety pin but taped it exactly the same place, then ran the thread through the circle part that is at the bottom of most safety pins. Can also be done with a paperclip.

I love your solution. And with something so simple. I'll have to remember this.

That is a MacGyver solution for sure! Well done!

I sat mine in a cup and skipped the thread spool.

Same here. But the fork is a cute idea.

Clever idea !

Because of the way her machine threads it wouldn’t work without the fork and spool pin.

I put an empty spool of thread inside the cone and just set the whole thing on top and thread as usual.

I did something similar before I got a cone stand...I used a large paperclip where you used the fork!

Great idea with the fork. I think I have that exact same sewing machine. lol or at least it looks the same. Same color and everything. I pretty much have the same set up on my sewing machine for cones also. Only, I used a pin taped to the back of my machine. I really like the fork idea though.

You are a true quilting Ninja!

Great idea!

That is very clever. You can never stop a sewer from figuring out something to keep our habit going. Very creative.

Tiggersmom 04-10-2018 10:41 AM

I say you are very clever and genius. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting - great idea to solve what could be a tangly problem!

Ingenious! I giggled because, it looks silly, but it works and is a testament to our love of the craft that we'll do what needs doing so we can sew. Lol! Love it.

I improvised once using a c0ffee cup, with a 12" or so dowel rod rubber-banded to it, with a paper clip on top. The paper clip was held in place with a thumbtack. I ran the thread up through the paper clip, then through my machine. It worked perfectly. :D

QuiltsRfun, the timing of your post is amazing...I am visiting my kids in California for a month so I stopped into my mother’s home to rescue an old Singer Athena 2000 from her basement and it’s in the shop getting a tuneup so I can work on a project. And, guess what? I brought a cone of Aurifil with me....

thank you for your post and clever idea...it will come in handy.

Great idea, when there is the will, there is a way!☺

'Necessity is the mother of invention' is what my mom used to say all of the time. ! A great solution to your need.

You really rock!

Rose_P 04-11-2018 08:57 PM

That's what's known as an elegantly simple solution - the best kind. Thanks for the tip. Just make sure there are no rough spots along the tines of the plastic fork because that's where the mold might leave them when forks are made. Maybe a plastic big-eye needle, designed for yarn, would also work in a situation like this. I have a cone stand, but it's kind of an awkward thing for travel.

nanacc 04-11-2018 09:13 PM

I have done exactly the same thing before I had a stand! (With the safety pin.)
