I just bought 2 cones of thread from Connecting Threads (they were on sale) and now I need to know how to use them with my Janome 6600 do I use an insert or do you sit them beside the machine? thanks

Cones are not meant to set on the machine because they aren't suppose to rotate. I use a thread stand or put the cone in a jar. I use CT cone thread and like it a lot. I use the neutral color for most all my piecing. I bought the cone of CT thin poly and it's great for bobbins and piecing.

I use a thread stand my husband made me He took a piece of wood and put a nail in it to set the thread on and then took a one foot piece of plastic pipe and put a round eye in the pipe I put thread threw the eye and then thread my machine

The cone sits at the back, on the right, on the thread ledge where there are 2 pins to hold spools/cones. There is a metal arm that swings up over this area. It has 2 loops on the bar. You first thread the thread through the loop that corresponds with the side the pin your spool/cone is on. The left side is for the needle & the right side is for winding bobbins. I don't have extra cones, so I put the cone on the left spool & wind from there. Machine doesn't seem to mind. I store the thread "caps" on the right pin. You don't need to use a cap on a cone. Page 3 of your instruction Book shows the back of your machine and the shelf/ledge for the spools/cones. Pages 17 & 19 have drawings that show where to put the spool/cone.

Years ago, I had to use cone thread at a class in Houston but didn't have a cone thread holder (as mentioned above) so someone gave me a safety pin. This I taped to the top edge of my machine, with the little circle end sticking straight up, and I threaded my thread end thru it before threading the machine the rest of the way. The cone was placed behind the machine just below the safety pin so that the thread lifted UP off the cone, rather than running from the side of the cone.

Mine just sits behind my machine in a jar. Works great.

I love Jan's pin idea.
My cone sits in a tall thin can; contained cookie sticks in a former life
