As a new quilter what is the edicate on copying quilts that you see either in person or online. No necessarily making an exact copy, but are the basic blocks up for grabs or should you ask each poster for express permission. I see alot of quilts and think I would like to try that pattern maybe in different colors. Not sure what the 'rule' on this one is and don't want to step on any toes.

Personally, I usually find a video with a technique I like and make a couple of quilts with it, then move on to something else. So far, all of my patterns are available on line and available for anyone to use. I think if you see something you like ask the poster the name of the pattern/technique used and is it ok for you to use it.

This wasn't something I had thought about. I just didn't think you could sell them.

It may be the poster's own original design so you should always ask first, even if you have no intent to sell it.
