Cord minder for iron?

I just learned that there is something called a cord minder that attaches to your ironing board to help keep the cord of the iron out of the way. I have been researching those online, and the reviews are mixed.

I am very interested to hear from anyone who uses one and I would like a recommendation for which one to purchase.

I have a vague memory of my mother having one, but I don't remember ever using it. I ironed a lot as a kid, so may be it didn't work out well and she put it up or something.

Any opinions would be very welcome. I read about this cord minder yesterday on another thread. I always learn so much from this board!

I bought this one at walmart years ago. I use it everyday. I love it. At $10.00, give it a try:

I have an old Mary Proctor Double Flip, which has a built in 14" tall minder with a plug. I use it occasionally, but I find the 'eye' (1" in diameter) that you thread the cord thru to be a little restrictive. when I thread the cord thru that it sometimes hangs up. When I do use it, I use a loop of seam binding to make a larger guide. I got the board at a garage sale, and I'm a bit leery of the electric hookup, so I plug the iron into the wall.

I used to have one similar to this one, but it annoyed me because the cord wasn't "free" and I was always pulling at it.... Gone! http://www.quiltersreview.com/iron-cord-holder/

I have this one and it works fine for me.

I tried one too and didn't like it. The cord was out of the way but it was hard to get to the end of the board without fiddling with it.

I have never used a cord minder but never thought I had a problem.

I had one that came with my Laura Star Steam Generator. It worked great. I haven't used one with my Oliso, I don't seem to have problems with that iron's cord. Not sure why.

I've had mine for years but found my cord would still get messed up with the fabric the farther I went across the ironing board. So I hung mine up on my iron holder I have attached to the wall. I also added an extension cord to give me enough length in my cord to take me to the end of my ironing board as I added a 2' x 4' board over my regular ironing board. Still gets trapped from time to time but not as bad as it used to.

I had one like Thimblebug and didn't love it. but used it for years. I also had a caddy that clipped onto the wide end of my ironing board. Gave that away recently. wish i hadn't!!!

I remember that my Mom had one attached to the end of her ironing board but don't know where she got it. I did all the ironing as a child and just accepted what was there and didn't have any trouble with it. I really don't have a desire to have one but hopefully the QB members can help you.

*LOL* According to Amazon, I purchased this on 18 October 2014. It's "springy" and works perfectly. Highly recommended.

Again, thanks everyone. Now I am trying to decide if I really want one. :)

I remember one that was sort of a combination of thimblebug and onebyone's from my childhood. A tall metal post with a loop on the top but a spring at the bottom. I, too, was the 'designated ironer' for lots of my childhood and this was a staple. Don't have one now. Not sure how the modern iron's would play with them as most have pivoting ends going into the iron base (and these seem to be a breakage risk - at least that's my experience).

I tried cord minders. Didn't like any of them. I solved the problem 100% with a cordless iron. One of the best sewing/quilting tools I have ever bought! I love my cordless iron!

I have had one of these( http://www.quiltersreview.com/iron-cord-holder) for eons and find it reallly useful. But I never threaded the cord through the loop. Instead, I placed it in the coil "clip" at the top, leaving me enough slack to reach all areas of the board. The wand or stem is spring-loaded so it flexes when I need to get to the end of the ironing board then pulls the cord back when the tension is released by moving the iron back to the center of the board. Keeps me from fighting the entire cord. Didn't know they still made them.

OK- wound up with 2 posts after correcting. Sorry but couldn't get the first one to delete. ;-/

Same here. I had problems with any iron with a cord, except the small ones for some reason.

I have one similar to this but it is permanently attached tothe end of the ironing board in front of the metal plate that holds the iron.

I have not used it much as the cord on my iron is not long enough to go to the other end of the board and was sometimes getting caught up in the long wire. It can be useful when pressing for applique work when staying close to the wide edge of the board.

I have one I have used for a looong time - probably 40 years. Mine is one that you can plug the iron so your ironing board could be 5/6/7 feet from a plug in. The new ones do not have this feature. I have looked. I really like mine!
