Does anyone have experience with cordless irons? I need to get one asap. My loveable lab keeps getting tangled in the cord and pulling mine off the ironing board.
I've been looking at a Panasonic NI-l71SR.
Thanks for your help!

No I haven't but I have had experience with other cordless tool like my drill and my husbands shop tools. I wonder if it gets hot enough to do the job like a corded one.

Wow, that is a neat iron, I just read it's description. Does everything my Shark does minus the cord. Which is retractable after charging. I am going to put this one on my wish list for a possible replacement if my Shark iron goes belly up.

I have one and the only downfall obviously is that it cools down fast . So you are constatantly putting it back on the charger to get it back up to hot . I am at work and cannot remember the brand of mine, but it was suppose to be a better one :? LOL

I read that Maytag use to have a great cordless iron but now they aren't made like they use to. Have you tried the iron caddy? This is great if the iron is around children or pets. It's here: http://www.clotilde.com/detail.html?...criteria=iron+

Much cheaper then a new iron.

Looks to be a great idea (the iron caddy)
AND a great price

Not having any $$$, I came up with a low cost solution to dangling cords using a hook in the ceiling and about two feet of elastic (kind used for sewing pajamas and such). The hook is the type for hanging plants and includes a spring bar across the opening to prevent the elastic from being knocked out of the hook. Works for me.

What a great idea. I have an Invonage Home cordless iron - It's ok to use to iron open a seam-it's not that good when your'e trying to iron a couple of yards of fabric - it does not stay hot long enough.

The iron caddy is cute, put your cord still hangs down.....

Have you looked in the department stores ... or wherever they sell irons and accessories? I ask this because I have a metal extension on my ironing board end that is a hot iron prop and it has an antenna-like contraption clamped to it that holds the iron's cord up in the air ... leaving the cord long enough to iron easily (plus the antenna bends), but keeping it out of my way and out of the way of pets and kids. Mine came already attached to the ironing board, but they might have such a thing for sale, separately, in the stores. It might be worth your while to look before you buy a new iron. I have my iron plugged into a power bar that sits on a shelf about 2 feet off the floor and therefore very near my ironing board, which helps tremendously with my cord length, etc.

I know oreck has cordless irons, you can find them on ebay for under $50. Don't know how good they are, I have never used a cordless iron.

Sunflower7 02-25-2010 09:53 PM

I have a Panasonic cordless and I quite like it.

BellaBoo 02-25-2010 09:53 PM

The cord does hang down with the caddy but the iron can't be knocked off the board. I think that price must be a typo!

I have a cordless iron, it's a strange European brand so that information is no use to you! But I love it. It stays hot long enough to iron a few blocks and reheats very quickly. If I'm ironing yardage, I iron the section on the board, put the iron on it's stand, move the fabric to the next section and the iron is hot again. It also has the facility to be used corded and a facility to lock it on the stand, which is a great safety feature as I have two little kids. I love it. In fact, I have two, one in the sewing room and one downstairs for DH's shirts - guess which I use most?

I would say check out the heating up time (DH says that's to do with wattage!) and look for one that can also be used corded. But as a principle, it's a great thing! :-D

Oklahoma Suzie 02-26-2010 01:24 AM

I had one and didn't like it at all. It did not stay hot.

k3n 02-26-2010 01:28 AM

I guess it depends on the brand and like I said, the wattage. I was lucky - mine were cheapies (around 30 USD) from a supermarket and they're great. For info, they're 2200 watts. :-D

LindaR 02-26-2010 06:37 AM

the one I have is huge, just don't like it...right now I'm using a $15 from W.M. and love it but I don't have the dog problem LOL

bj 02-26-2010 08:22 AM

I have a Maytag cordless that I like very well. I don't think it cools down too quickly, and it heats back up pretty quickly when it does cool off. I've had mine for about 4 years. I like the fact that it is heavy.

schwanton 02-26-2010 08:42 AM

I have an Oreck cordless iron. I got a gaggle of free gifts if I purchased an Oreck vacuum cleaner. I like the fact that I don't have the cord dragging and I can keep the base in a safe location where the cord will not pull it off the counter. It is a little larger than my regular iron and a bit heavier, but if you need a new vacuum ...

elliot 02-27-2010 04:41 AM

I have a cordless iron from oreck. It only stays hot for about 40 seconds then needs to go back on the stand. Needless to say, I went back to a corded iron.

ORSunshineQuilter 02-27-2010 04:26 PM

I was lucky enough to get one of the Maytag cordless in the late 90s and I absolutely love it. Just like other Maytag products (before they sold to Whirlpool), it has not needed ANY service. It has been great. I use it for quilting only. I have a regular iron for ironing large items and regular laundry (does anyone do that any more?!). Unfortunately, they no longer make the Maytag. I don't know what I will do if and when this one breaks down. So far, so good! The best is I have never had it spit and sputter at all either!

Momwood 02-27-2010 08:11 PM

Yes--- I have used a cordless iron since Panasonic came out with theirs in 1998. I LOVE mine. I wouldn't use anything else.

grammypatty7 02-27-2010 09:23 PM

I don't recommend the Oreck. I had one for 4 years and it started leaking but it couldn't get the fold lines out of fabric. When I bought my new one, it has a cord and the difference is amazing. I can quickly press anything and whatever kind of wrinkles come right out. I was not pleased with the Oreck. We got it free when we bought our Oreck upright vacuum cleaner and we love the Oreck vac.

Hi, I have a TeFal that I have had for at least 15 years if not more and I love it. I have been looking for another one as this one has fallen and I have knocked it over and broke part of it but it still works wonderfully. I bought a Oreck cordless (actually it came free as I bought an air cleaner) and I don't like it. It is much heavier than my TeFal and it doesn't stay hot as long. My TeFal has a very small base that it sits on and is easy to put it on where the oreck is big and clumsey.

I don't have a cordless iron but thought I would share a couple of items that I have for ironing. One is for the cord, which I find very helpful, and the other is an iron holder.

The cord is clipped to the top of the cord holder and doesn't go slack or get in the way like it does with some holders.

http://www.sewvacdirect.com/pold-90505.html

The iron rest is very good. It attaches to the ironing board at the end or the board so you get more ironing space. I also like the fact the the iron is laying down and more secure. (The screws that hold the holder to the ironing board do need to be retighted occasionally in order to keep it secure to the board and to keep the holder from sagging.) The iron can be laid in the rest either way so it is both right and left hand user friendly.

This picture is from Keepsake quilting. The site that has the cord holder also has the iron rest but the large picture wouldn't come up. Unfortunately, both sites are out right now but Keepsake says it will be back in stock in April. I have used mine for about 7 years and I am very happy with it.

Happy quilting and ironing!

I had one once and it wasn't worth a hoot!

GrammaNan 02-28-2010 07:38 PM

I just checked out the iron caddy and it is only $1.99! I am going to get one. I have had to many close calls with my baby, I mean dog.

SC 02-28-2010 08:23 PM

I had an Oreck. I loved the "cordless" aspect but it started spitting water every time I used it. One day it overheated while I was using it & scorched what I was pressing. I also had a Black & Decker which I really liked. It worked fine as long as I didn't keep it off the base too long. It finally quit working after 7 or 8 years. I couldn't find another cordless at the time so am now using a cheapie my son had at college (I think he took it out of the box once). I really miss my cordless!

Rachel 03-01-2010 06:19 AM

I had an oreck, loved it, but it died last year. It was probably 5 years old, it was a very heavy iron. I have the panasonic now. It took me awhile to get used to it, because it is so much lighter than the Oreck but I really like it too...

Quilting Nonnie 03-01-2010 08:48 PM

I have a Panasonic NI-L750SR 1500W. I've been using it for 14 months and absolutely love it!!! It never has a problem staying hot. As quilters we rarely iron great amounts of time anyway and I've found mine can go nearly 10 minutes before needing to heat up. That's rarely a problem, because I'm setting it down often enough for it to stay warm. It has wonderful steam too. I wouldn't trade it for a corded iron for anything!

saf45 03-02-2010 02:57 PM

i also owned one i hated it mine leaked all the time ,and it did not stay hot.good luck in your search.

Maxine Goodyear 03-05-2010 01:44 PM

I have a cordless Maytag and absolutely love it.
