Corduroy for quilt backing?
 

Would corduroy work well for quilt backing?

I'm thinking it would be great for lap quilts or car quilts.

I don't know about using it for backing, but years ago I made a trip around the world out of baby wale corduroy in pine green, browns and gold for my brother. I used thick batting, backed it with a satin chocolate brown sheet and tied it down. It's been decades (seriously, about 40 years) and the darn thing is still holding together and looking pretty good!

Funny you should post this, I was at a fabric store today and there was a display of similar corduroy near the cutting counter and I was fingering it and remembering the one for my brother...

It would definitely be warm. I think you would have to tie it or do a very simple quilting on a pretty heavy machine.

I used corduroy in a rag quilt along with cotton. thin or tight wale (lines).

I've used corduroy but just make sure that it is soft. Some never softens.

If it worked fine as a front .... then why would you question it as a backing?


BearIsGray .... I think corduroy would be perfect, front or back.
Yes, it may be a little harder to quilt, but honestly, I think it would not be all that hard.
Just different ... and you would just need to think it through before starting.

I used a thin corduroy as a backing on an utility quilt. It worked out fine, quilt was heavy when finished. One thing I did use simple straight line quilting. That was several years ago and the quilt is still used.

I've used corduroy on a picnic quilt back years ago. I did SITD quilting. It's holding up great.

I think I would just tie the quilt.
