Annette,
My advice is to start looking through magazines, quilt books and on the internet until you find a setting that appeals to you. There are a number of books published that deal with settings only. Spend the day in the library and pull out as many quilt books as they have.
I understand what you're going though. I have 12 redwork blocks finished but I'm still looking for that perfect setting. While I'm looking for that setting I make other quilts. :D Have fun with the search!

There is no hard and fast rule for what you do as far as border and sashing. On some quilts I add blocks untill I get the size I want , then add the binding. You need to google then look thru the type pf quilt you made and see what you like. Sometimes simple is best.........No quilt police here :D

Just a thought. Color strips of paper with colors you think you might like, lay it out, and watch it for a few days. This is a cheap and easy way to get started. It might help you figure out width of sashing, how much contrast in the cornerstones, etc.
