Cost of LA Quilting
I've just been reading Kitty's thread about the largest quilt you have ever quilted. I know quite a few of the ladies here send their quilts out to be long armed - my question is - Approximately what are the costs for various sizes, Single, Twin and Queen. I do understand that the more intricate the pattern the more it would cost. Just looking for approx. cost

I had two queens done this summer, one was 145 bucks, one was 160. Both pantographs
They charge by the square inch, side times side, so one of mine was bigger than the other. The ones in great demand probably charge more than beginners, and pantographs are generally less expensive than freehand work. When I'm at shows I make a note of who the longarm quilter was on the quilts I admire. |
It really varies by geographic region. Hopefully someone from Australia will respond. If there is a quilt shop in your area, ask if they have any brochures from long armers. The brochure should give the price, usually by the square inch (square cm? dm?)

It varies by region, reputation and experience of the longarmer, size of the quilt, type of design, and density. That said, typical costs could be 1.5 to 2 cents per square inch for a pantograph, 2.5 to 3 cents for freehand edge to edge, 4 cents for more dense designs. And the more famous professional longarmers often charge by the hour (and we are not talking minimum wage).

Thank you for the answers ladies. I was just wondering what the difference was like country to country.

What does it cost in Australia?

I charge $.015 per square inch for pantographs. Some are now charging $.02. But since I live on a farm outside of a small town in IA, I feel that is a fair price. I also have to offer free pickup and delivery to the city and surrounding area to attract clients.

Around here it 2 cents per square inch for pantographs, more for semi-custom or custom quilting.

I have had three quilts done by professional LA ladies in my area. They do it free hand style (not pantographs) with amazing results. I paid $100-$125 for twin size, edge to edge--they charged by the square inch. I also have sent two quilts to Happy Crafters in Kansas who do pantograph LA designs and paid $45 for one (double size) and $20 for the other (large throw size), plus return shipping.
