could use some help please
 

i've made a quilt for my sister that is 60 wide x 71 long and i would like to do the backing in 12 inch squares with the 2 fabrics i've used for the front. I'm not doing the math correct because In my calculations i get 60 squares. Now Math never was my best subject but this can't be right. Would someone please help me with the CORRECT calculations. I thank you and my brain and hair thank you(because not much hair is left i'm pulling in out)

Well, I get 30,but I assume you are going to cut 12 1/2 inch squares, allowing room for 1/4 inch seams.. That would leave you with a back of 60 x 72...not quite 60x 71... (Divide 60 by 12 to get five. Divide 71 by 12 to get 5.9...which would be six. So you need 5x6 = 30 squares)

Not too sure how you want to deal with the one inch difference. I would just make one square on each row a smaller size.

Well, without seam allowances, you would need 5 12" squares across and 6 12" squares down .. so you would need 30 squares. With seam allowances added, of course. :)

I think this is right-the quilt is 5ft by 6ft So you will have 5- 12 inch squares across and 6 ft down 6 squares down. Of course this doesn't take into account the 1/4 inch seams. Hope this helps.

Now it gets confusing. You need 30 12" finished squares, but your backing needs to be a little larger than your quilt top, so the 14 on the outside that are not corners will will need something added on one edge. The four that are corners will need something added on two edges. Or you can use the 12 1/2" inch squares and sew a small border all the way around.

On backs I like to us 1/2" seam allowances - they press flatter and easy to spray baste flat.

This would make 11 1/2" finished blocks (if you cut 12 1/2" squares) unless you are starting with a 12" unfinished in which case it would be 11" finished.

12" squares: So if you did 6 across for 66" and 7 down for 77" you would need 6 times 7 for 42 squares.

12 1/2" squares: So if you did 6 across for 69" and 7 down for 80 1/2" you would need 6 times 7 for 42 squares.

Either way would give you plenty extra around the top.

yes, i was wondering if you were going to add borders on the backing blocks. if not, change the size where you make more than needed to fit past the quilt top. i'd prefer adding borders and doing less amount of blks myself. it will look better. or you going to do quilt as you go? then of course you can fit the back blks to the front ones easily.

Thank you all so much. I see what I did wrong in my math.I did 60x71=4260 divided by12=35.5.
I didn't allow for 1/4 seam.Gees i do that every time. but I usually catch it duh brain has been in overload the last 2 days..

Should be 30------------5 x 12 across is 60
6 x 12 down is 72

5 times 6 is 30

Oops, the 30 pieces would be if the FINISHED block is 12" Accounting for seam allowances, I'd simply add a bit of border to make up the difference
