Could this work?
2 Attachment(s)
I fell for these bright yellow/touch of orange fabrics yesterday, and then found a few more in my stash. I do not know whether these might be too much the same to work in a scrap quilt? I tried out a few solids for maybe small keystones. . .the green isn't as gaudy as it looks -- maybe a green should be more of an apple? Could the blue work? a deep cinnamon?
I am thinking maybe 'stacked coins', or just a jelly roll. . . I have trouble visualizing whether these would just blend into a near-solid. What do you think? Any ideas for a pattern appreciated! |
IMHO- not enought contrast. too mushy! I would pick up some other fabric that has the green annd blue in it!!!
I agree with bigsister63 - you need more contrast unless you want the quilt to just be yellow. I do like the yellows you picked.
These are all very compatible for use in the same quilt, but I wouldn't place them next to each other, if that's what you meant.
Love your fabrics...the only way I would use those close together would be in a log cabin with the contrast of another color such as blue or green on the opposite sides.

I think they would look good in a Bargello, one of those that uses several shades of two colors. I made a blue and yellow one...a variation of Surf Song. Let me see if I can find a picture of it. Just in case the idea works for you.

And, looking at your fabrics again, I like them together. Not all quilts have to have large contrast. I have made several quilts that didn't "pop" with contrast.

Agree with both of these members.

Those are some pretty fabrics, but if it were mine I'd add a small print with similar colors to tie it all together. It will be such a happy quilt
Those are beautiful! I'd have fallen for them too and I'm not that big on yellows! I'd go for a bargello I think. Maybe with some lighter yellows as well, down to a creamy type colour? You could add another colour into the mix, but I think it could work with just yellowy tones.
I am not a big yellow fan, but........I have to say I really like the ones you picked out. So maybe I am a yellow fan after all. Don't have a suggestion for you just wanted to say what pretty ones you got. Love the yellow and blue. You did get some good suggestions. Be sure and show us when you are finished. BrendaK

Look at a color wheel....contrasting colors are opposite.....need some of those, along with complimentary.....on either side......
very pretty yellows I not good at picking colors but wouldn't they go nice with.. ugh! can't think of the name is it water color or color wash something like that, dina your bargello is beautiful
Beautiful fabrics, but from a distance, they will read solid.

I have a quilt top I am working on that uses the same yellow/orange fabric. I also used a orange/red and a dark green.
I think these fabrics would make a pretty string quilt with the turquoise blue in the center diagonal position and the rest in color order light to dark. You would get a pretty diamond pattern with the blue lattice line throughout.
The golds to yellow orange fabrics are just beautiful. If you wanted to pick up more in that color family & maybe some browns, taupe or other neutrals, that could look really stunning ... like a summer sunshiny day hanging clothes on the clothesline with the grass beneath your feet.
Or else pick up more shades of blues like another poster suggested. I don't think I'd go with the chartreuse at all, but if you really want it, maybe add some true yellows & some yellow greens in with it so it doesn't stand out so much. If you go with that, you could do a split analogous color scheme by adding in some blue-violets (instead of the light blue) to contrast the orange-yellow-green blends. |
I would add some prints, dots or something. When I make scrappies I just grab a bunch of colors and go at it. I try to scatter them so they don't end up together.
Love your fabrics! I would add at least one more in your green/aqua palette to tie those two together. Perhaps a print using both.
That will be really pretty and happy. |
You just need a print with all these colors to bring this all together.
Dina Beautiful Quilt. Lee: Love the colors, and I am a newbie, but I would find a fabric that had little blue flowers in it and then add that and some blues???
I would try shades of brown from cream to a rich, deep brown.
Add in lots of white and you will have a "Sunshine Quilt"!!
I would simply use the yellow- orange fabrics with white and I would be making a single Irish Chain quilt. Would probably use the teal as a single 1" border around it followed by a 3" white border. Good luck!
A good way to tell if there is enough contract is to take a photo of them together and change the photo to sepia or black/white on your computer unless you can do that on your camera. This will show you the contract between the fabrics. Or if you have a piece of tinted plexiglas or glass put it over the fabrics as it will change how you see the colors. I find if I dim the lights just right, I can get a better concept of the contrast or lack there of. I do this when I have my blocks up on the design wall and am wondering if I have them arranged correctly. Can see the lights and darks better this way. Just a suggestion.
I agree with seeming. Lovely fabrics!
Oh I should proofread! I meant sewmini.
Your quilt is gorgeous, Dina. Looks to me as that might work for her.
In my opinion a quilt needs light, medium and dark fabrics, otherwise you get a quilt with no contrast.
I like your fabrics, you could add some dark brown and have a great looking quilt. |
Love Dina's quilt suggestion.

I was just watching Sewing with Nancy "Quilt with Carefree Curves, Part 2" and a couple of her projects made me think of this post! http://video.wpt.org/video/2365112679/ (The first is at 11:10 and the second is at 15:45 if you want to fast forward through the video).
She showed a Fan and a Wagon Wheel that used yellows and oranges similar to what you've got, along with a multi-color batik and some pops of fuschia and purple. Really bright and pretty! I found a picture of the Wagon Wheel here: http://www.nancyzieman.com/blog/wp-c...G_4397-imp.jpg |

This looks great in person, but probably does not have the contrast it should have. Will add 1-2 borders, probably white and something quite different (narrow). This is just a progress shot..

A bleached muslin will set them off real pretty honey. I think you should make your dream.
I would add a print with green, yellow ,blues to tie it together

I made a quilt for my son who requested orange. I gathered as many oranges I could find that read solid and not girly, paired it with a rich turquoise Kona cotton. This pattern is not online anymore, but its a double ....(or maybe triple) 4 patch.
