Courthouse Steps

This morning I started cutting for a twenty block scrappy batik Courthouse Steps. My middle square is 3 1/2 inches. I have seen photographs online with a very small middle. They are quite pretty and I may make one sometime in the future. I like both.

Have you ever made Courthouse Steps? Which middle did you do? I'm just wondering which one is more popular.

I’ve only made a regular log cabin, not a courthouse steps. I had fabric I really loved for the centers & each finished at 4”.

I made one courthouse block for a sampler quilt. I think I used the smaller center simply because I was pulling from 2.5 inch scraps. But I prob’ly would like the larger center just as much. In my mind it looks quite nice (0: !

I've only used Courthouse Steps as connecting blocks, but I like the smaller center. It gives more room for color play.

I think I would make them all the same size.

Jenny Doan has this wonderful courthouse steps that was made using the Shabby Fabrics first line called Welcome Home. I made a few tests blocks using other fabric so that will be my next quilt.

I made a navy/cream and dark gold tone one many years ago for my son Greg. One of the first bed sized quilts I ever made. Honestly don't remember what size I used at the time. What I do recall was that he was a teenager with a new drivers license and was always getting tickets and had to go to the court house in town to pay them. Thought if he slept under the quilt he might change his driving habits.....LOL...but it worked.

I have a courthouse steps quilt made by my great grandmother around 1900-1910. The center square is red and finished measurement is 1 1/2"

I've made Courthouse Steps, as a matter of fact it is my avatar picture, so you can see it. I used a small center because I was making it from a pattern but if you use a larger center, your blocks will be larger faster. No right or wrong, just personal preference.
