My understanding is that you are not supposed to sell things with copyrights. You can enter them into shows as long as you give credit to the designer.

Good point. And I think that a lot of patterns (most, even) are not all that new and that with a pattern you're paying for directions and suggestions and math. Which is why I don't buy them anymore because I have to figure it all out to check for errors, anyway.

But I can't see how most of the Holt stuff is even able to be copyrighted. People have made circular flowers and pieced tulips for a long time. I see it as inspiration, rather than originality.

I've seen patterns that state you can't make and sell a product with that pattern but it makes no sense to me.
I can see if you wanted to mass produce the pattern to sell that would be illegal but making a product?
