Have you tried the free You-Tube tutorials?

nstitches4u 02-07-2014 07:50 AM

I love Craftsy classes. You can work at your own pace and hit rewind if you miss something. The teachers are available to answer questions. It is a great platform.

Calran 02-07-2014 08:18 AM

I love the classes. Get the free ones and classes on sale. I have learned so much.

Reba'squilts 02-07-2014 08:59 AM

I have taken a number of classes from craftsy. I wait until they are on sale. They also have free mini classes that are nice, free! Try one to see if you like the format. The classes work good for me!

dcamarote 02-07-2014 09:23 AM

I have purchased a couple but usually on sale. I like them and also that you can go back and watch as many times as you want.

jul12 02-07-2014 09:27 AM

I've bought several - but only as others advise, when they half price or near to it - and then they are excellent value.
Even experienced quilters can learn from how others do things, and there are many useful tips and hints, and alternative methods. Yes there is a lot on You Tube, but with the classes you do have access to the teacher with any questions or queries and they are answered in detail quickly plus the subject is dealt with in far more detail, sometimes with back-up PDF info, and I've also discovered some notions I didn't know of, not being a resident of the USA - and also how some teachers use "non" quilty bits & pieces in their work.
It is useful to read the reviews before buying...they are helpful to judge if a particular class is for you or not. I've been pleased with the ones I have.

DonnaC 02-07-2014 10:25 AM

They are certainly worth it! However, I've never paid full price for a class. Sign up for Crafty's e-mail list and you'll get plenty of good offers. Also, many of the teachers of their classes have blogs where they will offer a better price if you click through their link... you could look at the classes and then google the teachers' names that you're interested in, find their websites and maybe get a good discount!

I have a smart TV and use the internet app to watch Craftsy. If roku has that! no reason you can't watch it on your TV.

I watch Craftsy classes on my old computer that runs XP with no problems. There were some issues at first but I installed the Chrome browser (just for Craftsy since I use Firefox for everything else) and followed the suggestions from the Craftsy technical folks. My suggestion is to send Craftsy an email and ask them what you need to do to watch their videos with the XP operating system. It's worth the effort.

I have not taken any of the "pay for" classes. All that I have taken for "free" were great. The best part is, if you need to go back to see something again, it has a 30 second review, which has been a great help.

charlottemarie 02-07-2014 11:49 AM

The Craftsy classes are very reasonable and a resource I appreciate very much. You have it forever and that is very important to me. I learn things from them and I am not afraid to take them because I can watch them over and over until I get it right. The classes on PBS are going away slowly but surely and I learned most of my skills from them. This is very good. Just buy them when they are on sale and you won't be paying too much.

fivepaws 02-07-2014 11:57 AM

I highly recommend Craftsy Classes. I have taken many of them and have never regretted spending the money. All were worth the price.

MargeD 02-07-2014 01:00 PM

I have purchased 3 or 4 Craftsy classes, especially when they were at a good sale price, like the Carol Doak paper piecing class for under $20. I've taken classes from Carol Doak, (live) and her Craftsy class is just as good as being there in person. I like the Craftsy classes because I can "attend" them when it is convenient for me and I don't have to leave home to attend them, especially in snowy weather.

It doesn't have it (or didn't last time I checked). There is a playon app that I have a lifetime subscription for and they claim to have that functionality but so far it's very wonky for most people. I tried it and it would not load a video (on some other site-I didn't even get far enough into it to try it at craftsy). We are in the market for a new tv and i want a smart tv but they cost about 2 or 3 times more so I am 99.99% positive dh won't go for that.

carolaug 02-07-2014 02:06 PM

I watch one lesson each night before I go to bed each night. I have enjoyed the quilting classes. The free one on knives is also very interesting.

duckydo 02-07-2014 04:22 PM

I have taken several of the classes and I think they are really good and detailed. And it is yours for ever. They run sales all the time... I usually don't pay more that $20, and most LQS charge more than that...

I hav been impressed with their classes both free and purchased.

carolaug 02-07-2014 05:37 PM

I love, love Cindy Needham's whole cloth classes...so far her classes are my favorite!

gale 02-07-2014 06:07 PM

I tried it with playon but the videos are apparently in a format that they don't support. I won't be buying any more craftsy videos if they're going to make it this difficult to watch on a device other than my computer. :( A lot of people are asking for other options on their facebook but they don't seem to care.

jmoore 02-07-2014 06:12 PM

I have enrolled in several Craftsy classes and have enjoyed them. I usually purchase them on some sort of promotion or discount but I love it that you have them at your disposal 24/7 and can replay them as many times as you need.

MarleneC 02-08-2014 12:29 AM

I have most of the Craftsy quilting classes and have enjoyed them all. There are a couple of LQS that give lessons but usually not anything I'm interested in and one shop has classes but doesn't send out notices so I miss those.

I also had to use Google Chrome with XP and it helps to undo the HD option.

Onebyone 02-08-2014 04:33 AM

Try Google TV instead of Roku. It's $35. There are many options but you have to have fast wireless and a capable tv or you will just get frustrated.

muskratwine 02-08-2014 07:52 AM

I used to use XP but had no problem with Craftsy classes. They run much better on Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox rather than Internet Exlorer. If you have problems, contact them - their customer support is awesome!

tessagin 02-08-2014 08:05 AM

Depending on what type of class, you may be able to check out You Tube videos.

I never knew that -- I am also running Windows XP. What do they require?

madamekelly 02-08-2014 09:02 AM

Craftsy classes are great, and youtube is very instructional. With youtube you should watch several people's videos to find a method that works for you. Worked for me.

ItsJustMe 02-08-2014 09:15 AM

Craftsy is really good. I've taken more than 20 classes, and the best thing about it is that if you're not satisfied, you can get a refund. You can't go wrong, in my opinion.

Do you mean google chromecast? I've heard of good and bad experiences with it so I didn't want to buy it only to find it doesn't work for me. They've changed it recently so people who have had good experiences may have older versions. I already have a roku. I've had it for a while and I wish I could use what I have instead of buying something else. :(

gale 02-08-2014 10:08 AM

I'm looking into getting a long hdmi cable to try hooking my computer up to my tv. Not sure if it'll work or if my tv has a spare hdmi port (I'd have to swap it out every time if not) but it's worth a try.

feffertim 02-08-2014 10:23 AM

Absolutely worth the money. They go on sale quite often, so you can wait for the sales if you think they are expensive. I think they are wonderful. You can watch when ever you want, ask questions on line and the instructors are the best.

fireworkslover 02-08-2014 01:18 PM

I have taken many classes from Craftsy. Most I've gotten on sale or Free. I've learned some new things up to lots of new things in each class. Some I might never go back and watch again but many I've gone back multiple times to watch portions over again. I think there would be some classes that you'd benefit from, depending on your specific interest. If you are unhappy, contact Craftsy and they'll refund your money, I've heard. I also like the questions/answer portion of each class. Many times other students are able to chime in and offer a solution to a question.

frannella 02-08-2014 01:20 PM

I don't/won't pay more than $20 for a Craftsy course. More than that and, I agree, the classes are too pricey. I assume you are signed up for the Craftsy newsletter? Subscribers get periodic offers of reduced prices for certain courses that are generally sale priced in the range of $15-30. As someone else on this thread mentioned, some $40 Craftsy classes are available half-off at the Craftsy instructor's own web site. Alternatively, instructors sell their own instructional DVDs (Carol Doak comes to mind but there are many others) and they, too, periodically go on sale and are priced in the $20-30 ranged; DVDs are yours forever, and not dependent on an internet connection. I have bought many Craftsy classes, and most of them are very helpful. Create a wish list and then be patient!

penski 02-08-2014 03:06 PM

I have taken craftsy classes along with Block of the Month and i love them , the best part is the class will stay on your account and you can always go back for a referance

quilt3311 02-09-2014 07:03 AM

I've done a lot of the classes. I wait till they go on sale, usually under $20. I find that there are lots of good information in the class, plus you do have the option of asking the instructors a question. Also they stay up and do not expire which for me is good. I usually go for the technique classes rather than the ones that have a specific pattern. I can't get to regular classes at a shop etc as have handicapped hubby and can't get away.

Kwiltr 02-09-2014 09:46 PM

I'm a Craftsy fan! Best thing since sliced bread!

What does the site do when you try to access it? Is it your browser that doesn't work? XP should work just fine. :-)

I also have a lot of their classes in my list. Some are free - BOM comes to mind, which are free I think. I like the fact that I can go back whenever I want. They were how I learned to quilt 2 years ago. I watched a few of the classes and then just dove in and made 10 quilts in 3 months.... all tied, haven't machine quilted one yet, only small things. :-( I wait until the classes are on sale. Get on their mailing list so you will know. :-)

Chrome is a browser - the only one I will use. Get it here: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95346?hl=en

I had trouble on Craftsy last year with IE. It's a problem with their end not being programmed for all browsers. Use Chrome and you will be fine.
