Crayola Washable Markers

Hi there!
I was looking to find out if anyone has used crayola washable markers to mark their quilts and how successful you were. I have used lots of different water soluble markers, but I feel like they run out quickly or the tip tends to fall apart. I saw someone mentioned they used the crayola washables and had success and was wondering if anyone else uses it as their go to marker!

Thanks!

I have used blue, yellow, and green. I've been leery of black and red. The ones I have used worked just fine, but it never hurts to do a test run on a scrap of your fabric.

I've used them and they worked well for me. But the tip did wear down pretty quick. Last quilt I used a Frixion pen and loved it. I went over it with a hair dryer to remove the markings before adding the binding. The quilt will get a washing once the label is on.

Test on every fabric in your quilt. I've come across fabrics that the marks didn't come out of. My favorite marking tool is Blue Line Eraser. It comes out of everything I've tried so far. I love it!

Make sure you follow the washing instructions on the markers. I haven't had any problems with them washing out so far.

I haven't had any problems but I always do a test on all the fabrics first.

nativetexan 06-16-2014 05:44 AM

yes, do test. i used green on yellow fabric and had to wash that quilt about six times using everything i could think of. Finally the markings went away. Never again.

I've used the crayola markers with good results. A warning though, be sure to remember what color thread you used in the quilt. I used yellow marker on some white fabric. I washed the quilt three times, getting really upset that the yellow marker was not coming out, then realized that the marker had come out, I had used yellow thread on the quilt! Duh!

I use the washable Crayola markers all of the time - love them. I was having trouble with the tips getting mushed and torn even.. until I found the fine tip. These are awesome!! I have not had any problems with them not washing out... BUT I do be sure to wash as soon as I can and I spray with Shout or Spray-n-Wash before I throw them into the washer. http://smile.amazon.com/Crayola-12ct...shable+markers I have found them cheaper than this at other places... they are soo worth it though

cassiemae 06-16-2014 01:21 PM

That is all I use are the Crayola washable markers and have never had any problem.

I use them all the time. I got aggravated with the prices being charged just because something was "quilting" related/labeled. Never had a problem.

omaluvs2quilt 06-16-2014 01:58 PM

I've tested them on scraps with no problems, but I'm still scared to try on an actual quilt! Just call me chicken :)

brandeesmom 06-16-2014 07:46 PM

Being using them for several years and never had a problem.

Thanks everyone ! I just started marking a baptist fan on a quilt with a water soluble marker. I am not sure how long it will last me, so I may be brave and switch over. I will make sure to test before I do!

Wow, I never thought of using those. I learn something new every time I come here.

crashnquilt 06-16-2014 08:07 PM

I use the Crayola Washable Fine Markers all the time. I do not use the black but have had all th other colors wash out completely.

PlanoDebbie 06-16-2014 08:41 PM

I haven't used the washable markers, but I do use my set of Frixion pens all the time. The heat from your iron will make the marks disappear.

youngduncan 06-17-2014 04:01 AM

I've used the Crayola washable markers countless times for marking quilting designs. The marks have always disappeared completely when the quilt was washed. I will say that using the markers on brightly-colored batiks doesn't always work -- the batiks are so bright that I often can't see the marks. In those cases, I just have to "wing it." On one of my quilts, I resorted to printing out my quilting designs, pinning the sheets of paper to the quilt sandwich, quilting through the marks, then tearing the paper away. Ya gotta do whatcha gotta do, right?

I've used them for years. I use all the colors including black and red depending on the color of the fabric and what colors I have left. I have ironed over it and it still came out. I have left a quilt top marked for over a year and it still came out. Love them. I usually buy them when they have the back to school sales. I have used an off brand name and they worked just as well.

I use the fine tip washable markers but I do test on fabric before I use it. I have never had any problems.

Carly in SC 06-17-2014 07:10 AM

Just note that they must be washed out with soap and water, not just rinsed with water. I have used them a couple of times with no problems.

quilterpurpledog 06-17-2014 07:18 AM

I have used them quite a lot and really like them and have never had a problem washing them out when I wash the quilt. I always wash my quilts in the washer and with HE detergent because I know that is how it will be laundered in the future. I like the fine tip because I can use it with a stencil. However, it is best to mark lightly so you don't ruin the tip. I personally do not care for frixion pens. They do mark well and iron off nicely. However, because they will reappear if put in a cold atmosphere I know there are chemicals left behind and we really do not know about how those chemicals will affect fibers of fabric and/or thread in the future. I am not willing to take the chance. A good example from the past is the use of salt mordants on silk fabrics.

I made a quilt using regular normal Crayola crayons. do a search on the web and you'll get instructions. then I just heat set the design. washing was not a problem. some of the markers you need to take extra steps to set the colors. so make sure you read the directions. there was no problem w/good old 64 pack of crayolas.

jdavis10 06-17-2014 08:22 AM

This is great! I am so excited to try them out. The teacher in me is especially excited because I love school supples!

Thanks. Great to know. I bought these markers along time ago but have a been a bit timid about using them.

After all the horror stories I have read online about marks not coming out, or reappearing later, I think I will use the doodle on tissue paper, pin down, and stitch through it for quilting. I can tear paper away and wash out any remaining bits of tissue. No surprises that way.

I love that story! It could have been one of the stunts I pull!

I took a white scrap of muslin and tested each color of the 50 pack of the Crayola SuperTips washable markers. Not all of the colors washed out. I did them one by one and set aside those that worked. Those that didn't wash out completely with cool water went into a school supply box for our church. I used cold because not all quilts will get washed in warm water. Then I tried Crayola Ultra Clean fine line washable markers. Every color washed out with cold water.

RipStitcher 06-17-2014 05:25 PM

Nana....

I was *just* going to ask if there is a difference between the washables and the "ultra-clean" ones.

I just picked up my first package of these "ultra-clean" ones just a few days ago - and haven't had time to do my homework or test them. (I have some white washcloths I use for clients here... I was thinking of making one striped and see how it washes out!)

So all of the references in this thread, it seems, are for the "other" washables... nobody else is talking "ultra clean".

Are these new ultra clean ones supposed to be better? Or do the results still vary with these, too?

G'ma Kay 06-17-2014 06:27 PM

I've never had a problem with the lines not washing out, HOWEVER....I've never left it on for long, always quilted immediately and then washed.
