Crayola Washable Markers-Wow

Tried these for the first time today after reading all the posts that they worked. WOW...really scary having all those blue marks on beige fabric. But after washing in hot water there was not even a hint of color from the markers. This makes me want to do some new patterns for quilting. Thanks to all those who said they worked!

Annaquilts 01-27-2013 11:18 PM

Great! Besure not to use an iron on them and wash them soon after marking.

Anniedeb 01-27-2013 11:53 PM

Wow...I missed that post! I'll have to try it. Scary, but I trust you!

I wonder what they would be like if used to mark embroidery patterns onto fabric, since they are washable do they leave any trace of color after washed? I may have to try this out.

sounds like another great use of the washable markers!

My granddaughter's tee shirts from years ago still have some of the colors that did not wash out. I was hesitant to use them on a quilt but it seems the markers have improved since then.

Using these markers are like anything else.....you MUST try it out on a scrap of fabric first to see if it will all wash out. I've had great results using them on my quilts, but always testing first. I've even accidentally ironed the marked areas (with steam) and it still all washed out! I am using the generic brand of markers and they work fine too.

I'm planning on getting the Crayola ones as soon as I can get out.....what generic ones do you mean....where do you find them? TIA!

dray965 01-28-2013 01:37 PM

I used the crayola markers...the dark brown one on . . . on a green quilt's borders....wasn't satisfied with the design and put it away for 4 years. I got it out last fall and ignored the design and big diamonds in the borders. Then I washed it in cold water, dried it in my home drier and it came right out. This may not happen with all materials...but that brown marker on green cotton will come out.

Colours to avoid

Are there any colours of markers to avoid using...anyone have any trouble with a particular colour?

judylg 01-28-2013 03:50 PM

I might chance it with transferring embroidery design, if I used the same color of marker as yarn I was going to use. Just maybe, my thoughts today.

Sunnye 01-28-2013 05:46 PM

I just bought a cute little mini pack of them at Target for $1!

judylg 01-29-2013 04:17 AM

I have a pattern for a small quilt that has embroidered blocks, may try the washables out on this. I am using several colors, so will see how they wash out.

WMUTeach 01-29-2013 05:03 AM

Maggie Muggins, do NOT use yellow. It does not come completely out. Oh, it fades significantly but it never really goes away.

Buckeye Rose 01-29-2013 05:32 AM

I bought the "CraZart" brand.....about 8 different color markers in a pack for under $2 at Walmart....they work just fine, washes out great....I can say I've never used the yellow, haven't had a fabric to use it on....but the rest work ok.

judylg 01-29-2013 06:16 AM

Speaking of yellow, couple of years ago I was taking a wallhanging class, the quilting was done before hand, it was a diagonal grid, so we used yellow chalk, that left a wonderful line to follow, until it came to washing it, quilted with a metallic thread and the yellow remained, yes you have to be careful with yellow, unless it is light and you are going over it with yellow. That was a huge disappointment, yes I am careful with it. Red, too. I think the first thing I would check is when it is wet if it bleeds all over, that can be a problem.

I've heard yellow. But like has already been mentioned, just test it first. These markers are really a godsend!

Someone said yellow is a problem.

All of our local schools use only the washable markers for the lower grade students. As the teachers say... when the child slips and doesn't stay on the paper...so much easier to clean off the table tops.

gabeway 01-29-2013 07:03 AM

Haven't tried them yet but may do so now.

honeybee_2000 01-29-2013 08:11 AM

if you mark a whole quilt top with these crayola markers, will I have marks left even after I wash the quilt when done?

Buckeye Rose 01-29-2013 08:21 AM

The markers "normally" wash out fine....but you must do a trial run of the markers on the fabrics you are intending to use (mark and then wash)....you don't want any ooops.

2blackcats 01-29-2013 08:54 AM

Just bought mine yesterday and can't wait to use them - think I'll throw the yellow one out!

Suzette316 01-29-2013 09:03 AM

About a week ago, I made two test pieces with all 8 colors of the Crayola Washable Markers. On the one piece of fabric, I simply took each color and wrote its name and a few squiggles using that color on a scrap piece of my quilting fabric. Then I did the same thing on another scrap piece, but I ironed that piece, just to see what would happen. I waited a week and just washed both pieces of fabric. On the one where I did NOT heat set, every single color came out (even yellow) completely after swishing in water with a bit of detergent in just a few seconds.

On the piece that was heat set, the only color that didn't come out completely was blue. Every other color disappeared completely - again, even the yellow.

So that's my experiment with these washable markers. For future quilts, I will always test on the actual fabric I want to use them on, of course, but it helps me to know that these really do have the ability to wash out completely, even when heat set (except for the blue in my test pieces).

Hope this helps some of you a bit! :)

Wondering if any of you are using these and hand quilting? It takes a while to do a whole quilt by hand.

Yes, I only hand quilt and this is how I mark it. In fact, I just finished a top and am about to mark. I just put a scrap of fabric in the wash with several colors on it to test. :)

denveremerson 01-29-2013 10:20 AM

Okay, you've convinced me. I'm gonna try the washable markers.

Suzette316 01-29-2013 10:38 AM

Adding to my post above, I took another look at the test piece that I heat set and I didn't notice it before, but the green as well as the blue did not wash out completely. It's much more faded than the blue, but not completely gone like all the other colors.

I know that these aren't meant to be used by heat setting them, but while experimenting with them, I thought I'd see how they did under these conditions. Just wanted to pass this along in case it helps anyone! :)
