I've done several crayon stuff and they all seem to come out okay. Maybe do a test block before doing such a beautiful design in your blocks again with the suggestions given here.
I guess the biggest thing is the ironing. I use the same crayons that are in your picture.
I washed this rooster before giving it to my mom

Think I have seen perm. markers that you use just like crayola's. Check out Wal-mart.

I have always used regular Crayola Crayons, in fact my granddaughters laugh at me cause I won't let them use my crayons and I have a special box for them. I found that if you don't apply sufficient coloring they will sort of fade out after you press them. When I have taught people how I do it I always tell them that they need to really make it dark when coloring so it doesn't fade out which does happen some when you add the heat but I have never heard of it totally disappearing. I also place the paper towel right on top of the crayone coloring when heat setting it like Jaciqltznok said on her blog. I think it is so much fun to color and embrodiary and quilt. Good luck on your pieces I am sure they will work out just fine and very beautiful don't give up.

I use Crayola Fabric Markers (sold at Hobby Lobby) ,made for 100 % cottons. Very pleased with results.

I have never tried this, but am going to watch all replies and see the best method; will try it later.

It seems we all disagree - best thing to do is try all the solutions on your own and see which is best for YOU, Good Luck!

No. Most of the sites I read, and the fabric crayon packages say that with cotton, you're not supposed to use fabric crayons, that the fabric crayons are only for poly/cotton blends. Is that wrong?

Your're right - fabric crayons are for synthetic fabrics, or fabrics with a high synthetic content!

I'm going to try again - several of these solutions. I have 5 quilts to make, and I don't have time to cut out and hand-applique all the pieces for 30 SB sues, (6 daughters x 5 quilts), and then hand-quilt. Arghhh! I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the suggestions.

That would be my question.

I thought I would make a center panel with crayons, then do hand embroidery embelishments, then hand-quilt each one. Good idea, right? Well, I did the first, the baloon bouquet, and it was as cute as it could be. 6 different colored baloons, 6 different little Sues, the strings tied with a big bow. And I did everything right . . .
Cotton fabric - check
Washed - check
Dried with no fabric softner - check
Ironed freezer paper to back - check
traced design on front and colored in with crayolas - check
Paper towels on ironing board - check
panel face down on paper towels, iron set on "cotton", heat set all work - check

then I decided to wash it again before I did all the other work - embroidery, etc. and !!! Gone! All of it --- washed away!!! What happened??? Any ideas?

Did you use Crayola crayons? I've done many of these with plain old Crayola brand crayons and have not had a problem. Other crayons do not have enough oil in them to set the color. They may fade a little when you wash in hot water, but most of the color should be there. To tell whether the crayon color has gone through the fabric, turn it over and look. If it is set, you can see it on the wrong side of the image. froggyintexas
