Crayon border?

1 Attachment(s)
I bought this Timeless Treasure fabric thinking it would work for my border. I tried the pencil crayons lengthwise and it was too busy. If I use the pencil crayon sideways (picture) then it is not wide enough (45) to go all across the top if I add the side borders. I could add cornerstones but that does not appeal to me.
OR use the pencil crayon fabic across just the top and bottom and then the black binding?
OR no added borders, quilt and bind with black?
What do you all think?

I hope my english is good enough...
I would use the crayon fabric for the back, if there is not enough fabric you can mix it with the red fabric, also the back with stripes in red and the crayon fabric. The binding only in black.

I would quilt and bind with black. Anything else seems to take away from the crayons. They stand on their own. Very dramatic quilt. Nice job.

marilynr 01-27-2015 12:37 PM

No suggestions, but I sure like your quilt

Learner747 01-27-2015 01:16 PM

I like the red border! It really makes your colors pop. I may try doing this quilt that is how much I love it.

I would just quilt and bind in black, let the bright crayons be the focus of the top. Then use the print, red and black pieced together for the back. Very cute quilt!! You always do such good work!!😊

i agree with karina. but if you like the crayon fabric border, i'd cut it so all sides are perpendicular to the center. it's looking really good!

PaperPrincess 01-27-2015 02:01 PM

I would add a really thin red stop border then another wider black border and I would cut the crayon fabric on the bias and use that to bind.

ManiacQuilter2 01-27-2015 02:01 PM

What about a skinny accent with the red and then the crayon fabric? I like the black binding. Turning out to be real cute.

thimblebug6000 01-27-2015 05:21 PM

Drat! But I agree that border fabric isn't doing it for those colourful crayons! Fun idea to cut it on the bias if you have enough to use for binding.

my thoughts exactly. And use the crayon fabric for the back. Thank you for posting. I want to make one now. What size is the block for the point of the crayon?

barny 01-27-2015 06:08 PM

Well, I may be weird, but I like the combination of red and the other border fabric.

Tartan 01-27-2015 06:13 PM

I changed the original pattern width of my crayon segments to 2-1/2 X 5-1/2 so the crayon top has to finish at 5-1/2 inches (with the black edges on) in width to be sewn to the crayon body. Change the measurement to whatever you want your crayons to be.

ube quilting 01-27-2015 06:58 PM

If I were making this cute quilt I would use red and make it a narrow flange to stop the black center and then add a black border in whatever width you want but a bit wider would frame the center better than a narrow border. Love how this turned out so far.
peace

I like the idea of using the crayon fabric for the backing. If you were to use a border, try out a thin red border (.5in) then add a wider back border (2.5-3.0in)

mmb195152 01-27-2015 08:02 PM

I like the red border, and then bind it in black, or red border and binding.

twinkie 01-29-2015 04:21 AM

I am glad to see this finished. I like the red border. But it will be nice no matter what border you choose.

elly66 01-29-2015 04:57 AM

If this was mine I would border in black so as not to detract from the crayons (which are nice and bright) then probably bind in the red fabric.

I personally do not like the little crayon border. I would keep it for another piece. I like the red border or the black border. They keep you eye on the fun crayons you created.

PaperPrincess nailed it IMHO. Love the brightness of the crayons against the black. Wonderful!

ykreeves 01-29-2015 05:26 AM

Your quilt is absolutely lovely. I agree with others to use the crayon fabric as the backing and a solid color for your binding. Is there a pattern for this quilt. I love it.

w1613s 01-29-2015 06:36 AM

Oh dear! I like it just like it is. In fact, I like it so much I am going to keep a picture of your quilt and your thinking and save them for the moment I get to consider my next quilt top. I may even go so far as to repeat the boarder fabrics for the binding in the same places as the boarders so my version of your quilt would be bound but not too obviously.

Your quilt pleases my eye and makes me think. Thank you.

Pat

I agree with others about not using crayon fabric for borders - to me the scale seems too small - it gets lost. Much prefer a solid border. This certainly is a fun quilt and beautifully done!

JanieH 01-29-2015 07:33 AM

Love your quilt so much. I also like PaperPrincess' suggestion.

tartan, I vote for this clever approach!
And love your cheery quilt!

Trisher 01-29-2015 08:25 AM

I vote for PaperPrincess' idea too!

Great minds think alike... and there area several above!

Thin red border ½ - ¾ inch > double the width of the multi-crayon border you already have (ie: 2.5 doubled to 5?) > and MITER those corners only > then bind in black.

Good luck.
PS: I love crayons!

MargeD 01-29-2015 09:51 AM

I agree with Karina, the crayon fabric would make a great backing, but if you wanted to enlarge the quilt, you could add a 5" or so black border with black binding so that the crayons take center stage. That's a great quilt.

sewvic 01-29-2015 11:48 AM

I like the black border. Can you please tell us the name of this pattern. I like it better than any other crayon quilt pattern.

Tartan 01-29-2015 01:08 PM

The original pattern is called Color Me Happy! It came as a free insert with American Patchwork & Quilting October 2014. It was designed by Emily Herrick and the picture was on a white background with longer, narrower crayons.
I changed the crayon size and coloured background for my version. A super pattern for using up scraps and you can make your crayons to the size you want.

thimblebug6000 02-05-2015 05:01 PM

Tartan... after rummaging through my scraps this afternoon I am impressed with your selection of fabrics & colours. When I make mine I think the sections will need to be varying widths as I have strips at 1 ¼" and 1 ½" etc.... also mine won't be so dramatic as I'll need to use a light background, because my backing fabric is a white background.
Have you gone any further with yours?

rebeljane 02-05-2015 05:33 PM

I would bind it in the red - nice quilt

Tartan 02-05-2015 06:11 PM

I sandwiched and started the quilting today. I used my walking foot to stitch around the crayons using black thread. I put a black backing on with little multi coloured bits on it. I will FMQ on the crayons using the same coloured thread as the crayons I think. I am still thinking on if I want to try to get a balanced stitch with the coloured thread on top and black on the back or just put the same colour thread on the spool and bobbin and have the FMQ more visible on the back. I decided not to add a border and will probably use the pencil fabric for binding.
Use what scraps you have and make it your own. The original pattern had a white background and it looks really nice.

I have decided to quilt the ribbon candy FMQ down each crayon in matching thread. Since I want my ribbon to be in the center of one piece and then the line of the next, I am giving myself stickers to aim for. I could stick on pieces of painters tape but I thought the stickers I wouldn't have to cut.I was going to use yard sale round stickers from the $ store but they must just be available in the summer so these Valentine stickers will work. I will use them until the sticky wears off and then I will pin them.

thimblebug6000 02-11-2015 03:46 PM

Looking good Tartan! I am trying out a red crayon today, just out at the desk to print out a "point" to paper piece. I was looking for a project to kit up for the summer but I don't think this is it. I usually do blocks so will look at the stack of patterns I've got here to decide on that. :D Thank you for showing us your progress on this colourful fun project.
