I've been in a slump/not quilting for about a week, and was hoping it would lift soon, and oddly enough the thunder storm this morning that's still here through me back into quilting.

Now for my question, I'm making a quilt for my brother, he designed the front, and for the back, I was debating about using denim in the same pattern or a crazy quilt like back. He said he'd like denim, but as I'm going to fmq it (first time) denim seams a little harder so I'm going with the crazy backing. How would I go about doing this? I don't want to foundation piece it and would like to use my scraps of odd shapes on it. Should I do this in large blocks or just start building on one piece? Like start in the center and build out until it's big enough?

here's the top, it's gonna be scrappy within the colors he chose

If you go to my PDA page you can see the back of the large quilt I just finished. It is all pieced. It can prolly help you out.

Or go to quiltville.com. Bonnie gives some hints for a pieced back too.

U R FUNNY!!! you've been in a slump for a WEEK???

R U kidding? ROFLMAO---i've been there for a LOT longer!!

as for the denim--you'll have more problems than you're bargaining for...try something lighter & you'll be happier!

The crazy backing could be done either way - start in the center and keep adding rounds (sort of like a wonky log cabin on steroids).

Or you could just add pieces to each other and keep trimming so you have a straight edge to then add another piece.

The only word of caution would be make sure that you keep long seams AWAY from falling near where the edge of the quilt might end up after trimming.

You don't want to have to deal with a sliver of fabric at the edge and/or putting binding over that parallel seam. Not fun. At all.

I piece most of my backs. Love them.

oh I thought it would last a lot longer, and it might come back. I went up to my room (attic) to listen to the rain and got bored and looked at my cutting table and figured I could cut something. then it started thundering and I was happy all over again!
