Does anyone out there use crazy quilting very much? I'd like to start using it for things like pillow case borders and bags. There seem to be several techniques for doing it and I'm not sure which is the best one. Do I need a pattern? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sunflower

I've never done it, but I'm sure a google search would yield lots of options.
Just did a quick search. This site has 7 patterns, some are blocks and some for other items. http://www.nmia.com/~mgdesign/qor/styles/crazy/crzayqlt.htm |

The link to the site I posted has a cute little needle case pattern, may have to make one, even though I don't do a lot of hand sewing, would be nice for storing my needles.

I went through a crazy quilt phase years ago. For pillowcases, you'll need to make suitable washable substitutions - velour instead of velvet, poly instead of silk. Wash everything before piecing, then let your imagination take over! It's a great place to use bits of lace, doilies, ribbons, and such.
Will you be embellishing with hand embroidery, or using some of those shiny rayon threads? |
doesn't using a pattern for a crazy quilt sort of defeat the purpose? how crazy can it be if you use a pattern? :?:
|
didn' think of that

I interpreted sunflower as needing to learn 'how' rather than looking for a pattern lol!!! :D |
LOL, thanks Izy

There is another way to do crazy patchwork which looks really effective if you use fancy embroidery patterns and beautiful threads.....if you use a muslim foundation just position all the pieces in any order you like pinning them in place (or you could use a fusible stabilizer) then top stitch using any nice stitches, make them all different with different threads....it is lovely.....I will do one and post it if you would like to see!!!

go for it Izy :)

1. Cut a piece of stablizer or fine muslim/cotton 2. Position your scraps, overlapping 1/4" at edges (Pin if not fused) 3. Top stitch all raw edges. 4. Trim up!! Tah dah!! See for yourself... :D |

Wow, that is beautiful! But i don't get it. How did you make the flower? And how did you seal up all the raw edges. Did you seal the edges with the embroidery, or did you zigzag over them first? What if a machine doesnt do embroidery, can a person still do this?

Most machines have zigzag or satin stitch, or blanket stitch, infact any of these will do. If you fuse them down on a piece of muslin, or as I have done here with fusible stabilizer then all you have to do is overstitch the edges. If you look at the different stitches you can see some would be better than others, I think a closer denser type stitch would be better, as long as there is an overlap of fabric, and depending on what the use of the item is going to be for, it is just like raw edge applique.....does that sound any clearer ?????? |
Oooooh, ok lol i get it now :)

Back when I was in 4-H in the early 70's, I don't remember how all the material was put together, but we learned all kids of embroidery stitches around the different fabrics.

Lol  Patrice, I remember that song from when I ws a little un, used to sing it with the Brownies when we went on camp

Izy - Do you leave the edges raw and then top stitch them with things like zigzag stitching or do you turn the edges under first? If you leave the edges raw would it work for pillow cases since there is a lot of wear on them? I appreciate your comments. Rita

If the project is going to have a lot of wear and tear, I suggest you bond it first to a foundation of either muslin/fine cotton or a stabilizer as this version of crazy, is raw edge. If you overstitch it with a dense embroidery stitch or plain old zigzag or satin stitch it will be fine!! Just have a go and see what you think :D |
Izy you are just too clever. I love that. Like the stitches too. You have just given me an idea for the quilt that I am making and I did not want to do windmills and stars, that is just the job.
