I got the June Taylor pro and it is really big. I am never in a rush when I have a rotary cutter in my hand so I have never yet nicked it. It was much cheaper on sale with 60% off while the creative stripolgy is sort of an investment.

I have the June TAylor Shape Cut and have no problem. Like ManiacQuilter2, I try to be careful and not be in a hurry. My first fingertip cut taught me that. Told DH to go slow but some men think they know better after giving me his evil eye, which I informed him to retract or else, He proceeded at his hurried 5th gear speed and 5 hours later and 8 stitches and few hundred dollars later, he has slowed down to almost a crawl. If I can't get it on sale within my budget, I pass it up.

I have the June Taylor one now and it has lots of chips in it plus I have to fold the fabric twice to get it to fit. Checked out the Creative Stripolgy ruler at my local fabric store and though it is pricey I like it better as it has those grippy things on the backside so the ruler doesn't slip/move on me and its wider so I can cut more strips at one time. Can't remember if its taller or not.............short term memory here. When my budget can afford it I'm setting my sights on getting the new ruler.

I have both. I am one of the rare ones who doesn't particularly care for the Stripology ruler; I still prefer my June Tailor. I find the Stripology unnecessarily large and bulky. It is made out of hard plastic whereas the JT is made of softer plastic. I thought I would like the hard plastic better, but I don't.

I have several JT's in different sizes. The biggest one (the Pro) is really suitable only if you plan on cutting lots of 2.5" or 5" strips. It is very large and I guess I just don't like the large versions of these mats. They just feel awkward to me.

My preference for backing the JT's so they don't slip are the adhesive Grip Strips, which can be cut to size and placed anywhere underneath the mat. These stabilize the JT's for me so they don't slip. Here is a link to what I use on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Guidelines4qui...dp/B009DF9DLA/ .

I have not had a problem with nicks in the plastic from cutting. I think it really depends on your cutting style. If you always make sure that you are positioning the blade in an upright position as you cut, which is what I do, you won't get nicks. My guess is that nicks come when you are not paying attention and allow the cutter to be cutting at an angle.

I have the June Taylor one and have used lots and lots. It did break from putting it to the side. It broke from the bottom up to the #1 slot. I taped it back together on both sides with an enforced clear strapping tape, good as new.

I don't like either one of them. I bought a shape cut ruler when I first started quilting and hated it, gave it away.

I love my June Taylor. Couldn't quilt without it. I just saw it on Amazon for $33. I sure don't remember paying that much for mine! I don't know anything about the other one, but if it is pricey, that's just as well. :) I am too frugal for it, I am sure.

Still prefer my Alto's Quilt Cut2 to either of these. It's more versatile. Bought it years ago and its still going strong.

Dolphyngyrl 03-30-2016 04:34 PM

I love my june tailor shape cut and shape cut plus(larger version) I just put the grip dots in the 4 corners to control slippage. I have had both of mine for many years with no issues. They are pretty easy to use and cost a lot cheaper than the creative grids version that does the same thing.

colorfulom 03-30-2016 05:19 PM

I love my June Tailor shape cut, too. I bought a Stripology a year or so ago, thinking it would be better, and have found that it just doesn't work for me at all. I ruin fabric with it nearly every time. I've had other people check to make sure that nothing is wrong with it, and everyone does fine with it except me. Even with half my quilt guild watching, nobody could figure out what I do differently that causes so much trouble with it. So back to my trusty June Tailor!

DOTTYMO 03-30-2016 10:55 PM

I own both. I use them at different times. If doing a run of stripes from each fabric would use stripology mat as it holds a large area of fabric still while I can cut more than one strip at a time. I use June Taylor ruler for odd stories.

jmoore 03-31-2016 02:46 AM

I can only speak of the JT and I have had no issues with knicks. I use a 45 or 60mm blade depending on how many layers of fabric I am cutting and I take it easy when inserting the blade into the desired slots... I cut on my dining room table which is lower than my laundry room counter so it gives better leverage.

Onebyone 03-31-2016 03:48 AM

I used clear packing tape to put two June Taylors together to see if I liked it better that way. They are still together. My blade doesn't go over the edge anymore and easier to start the blade. I also have the Stropology ruler and it's a good one to take to class/workshops as it is more rigid. I like the markings on it better.

leighway 03-31-2016 07:48 AM

I've had my June Taylor for years and never had a problem, but I'm careful when I place the cutter blade in the slot. I wouldn't dream of cutting 2.5 strips any other way but using JT ruler.

My accuracy is there and when finished I hang it back up on the pegboard behind my quilting room door. It's very flexible and I knew if I did anything but hang it, I was taking a chance on breaking it.

bernamom 03-31-2016 07:54 AM

I have the June Taylor and use it frequently. It does have lots of nicks on the ends of several slots, but it doesn't affect the cutting. Much cheaper alternative to stripology.

Love my Alto cut also!

I have the original Shape Cut, the Shape Cut Plus, and the Stripology rulers (I'm a gadget junkie!). The original Shape Cut is smaller, and only has slots up to 12 inches. The Shape Cut Plus is larger, and has slots up to 18 inches. The Stripology is a tad larger than the Shape Cut Plus - slightly longer (slots up to 20 inches) but the slot length is shorter (~10.5 inches vs. 12 inches for the Shape Cuts). The Stripology does have the symbols across the bottom to mark the 1.5 and 2.5 inch cuts, which the Shape Cuts don't have, and there are vertical markings across the slots if you are cutting strips of a specific length, also absent on the Shape Cuts. However, it is easy to modify the Shape Cuts with grippers and I modified mine with nail polish dots under the 2.5 inch increment slots, which is cheap and easy. I use the Shape Cut when I'm not cutting a larger amount strips because it is smaller, and most often the Shape Cut Plus when I'm cutting a larger number of strips because I can make more cuts without moving the ruler. I rarely use the Stripology - I find the surface too busy with all the markings.

I bought the Alto Quilt Cut 2 before the JT or Accuquilt was used. I find the Alto to awkward to use. My cuts never come out the exact same size and I had the dealer watch me use it. After checking, her's weren't perfectly the same after the third and forth cut either. Lining up the metal ruler with the edge of the fabric, it has to be exactly lined up as the previous cut to get all the same. Cutting squares? I spent more time lining the strips up then it was worth. I use the mat, it's a fantastic mat.

I have the June Taylor Shape Cutter also. Mine is the smaller 12 inch model - it was on sale at Walmart for $8.00 when they were getting rid of their fabric department years ago. At the time I got it more because of the price and thought it was worth a try, and so happy with it. I have the Accuquilt 1.5 and 2.5 dies for cutting a lot of them. Just checked out the Stripology online and they seem so similar you need to determine what size would best fit your needs.

I would not worry about knicks - unless you are really unsteady - otherwise you are in a fairly narrow slit, not like the edge of a ruler.

caspharm 03-31-2016 03:07 PM

I sold my Alto a few years ago. I love my AccuQuilt Studio when I need to do a lot. However, I am finding that I like the Stripology a little better than my June Tailor when I need just a few strips.

indymta 03-31-2016 04:09 PM

I have both and definitely prefer the stripology ruler. I find that my cuts are more accurate...the ruler doesn't
slip. I nick the plastic on the June Taylor and while it doesn't hurt the ruler, it dulls the blade. Also it's easier
to cut 2 1/2 inch strips by following the marks at the bottom.

I did the same thing, Phyllis! Works like it always did. I actually have 4 of the June Taylor rulers and use them more than my Accuquilt Go by a huge margin. I nicked myself once and now use a Kevlar lined glove on my off hand. To keep the rulers from slipping, I use two of those metal 2" spring clamps that are 1" wide and have the plastic covers on the handles and the tips. Made in China, of course. I got mine at Lowes. They are a "guy" tool. I have a Martelli cutting mat that is thicker than regular mats and I let my mat's edge extend about an inch over the table (folding) that I cut on and that "lip" is where I apply the clamps including the edge of my carefully lined up JT ruler. No slipping. In my fishing shack, I have a Horne cabinet with a leaf that I cut on and the clamps there will fit over the cabinet edge. No Martelli there, sigh~

I have five of the June Taylor rulers and am using at least one of the rulers each day. I have one for cutting eights. I never did like cutting something ending in 3/8 or 7/8 with my regular ruler. With that June Taylor ruler, eighths are a breeze! Another ruler had slots every 1/4 inch. I accidentally ended up with two of the 1/2 inch slot rulers. If I have to cut 6" blocks, I use a tiny strip of masking tape to make 6" increments on the ruler. If the pattern also calls for 3" blocks, I mark the second ruler in 3" increments. The 2 1/2" slots ruler lets me quickly cut binding strips or to cut out 5" squares. Seldom do I cut out a quilt without using a June Taylor ruler for almost everything. I have an electric Accuquilt Go that I use for cutting circles, ovals, and unusual shapes. For straight lines, I am addicted to June Taylor rulers.

I have the June Taylor and never have even thought about it getting nicked....There is plenty of room at the base of the cut for the rotary cutter.......I've had mine for at least 15 years and use it often.....no nicks!
