Has anyone ever seen doilies used in a quilt? My quilting group has given me a challenge to make a quilt using doilies that have been donated to us. They have been crocheted with fairly heavy thread. That is one of my concerns.

Do you have to use them whole? I'm thinking bits & pieces used in a traditional embellished crazy quilt, or trimming on a sun bonnet sue dress, or if they are circles, cut into quarters and used as 'fans' in a square block (sew cut edges into seams, then quilt the fan down to the fabric).

I just saw this today.

OOPS! I see it's the same as the one Paper Princess already posted. I've also seen them cut into quarters and used as the corners for a grandmother's fan quilt. Depending on the size you could also use them as the centers for dresden blocks.

starch them stiff, and maybe zig zag them down to a block?
Maybe glue them down on the block with Elmer's glue to hold them in place? Or a temporary spray adhesive? :D:D:D

You could dye some, and embellish some with beads, buttons, ribbons, bows etc. Good luck.

Wow! Those are neat. Love the looks of it. Never seen a quilt like that.

One of the quilt magazines a while back had a quilt with circular doilies on it. They starched them really stiff and then sewed them onto a square. Then they cut the square into quarters and turned them different directions. It was really cute.

The Doily can be glued in place with a washable glue stick until you get the doily sewn in place. If there are any older shows of Simlpy Quilts, there is a show on how to do this to make a fan square with doilies.

Some thoughts from a crocheter
* crochet cotton can shrink
* if cutting the doilies be sure to factor in how to finish them to prevent unravelling
* if coloured crochet cotton, the colour may not be colour fast

I think doilies could create a lovely elegant quilt.
