I do both and was thinking about coming one in with a quilt. I have seen those make the quilts by bordering the blocks with sashing.....but are there other ways to incorporate cross stitching in to quilts? Any pattern recommendations?
I saw one somewhere, and they put a cross stitched block and it was the center and regular quilting was done around it.
I am doing cross stitch with quilting themes and want to put them in a quilt. Thanks for any suggestions.

Great idea :D
I always suggest that you choose your batting first, and then your cross stitch designs to match the size of the quilting requirements.(Ex: quilting every 4" then your design blocks should be 4" or smaller ) You don't want to have to quilt through your beautiful stitching. :D:D:D

You can also combine your cross stitched blocks with complimentary pieced blocks. :D:D:D

I have a wedding quilt I'm finishing, where I cross stitch the names and date and added it as one square in the corner.

I have made many. Here are some pics.

The Victorian house in the center is cross stitched and the green bushes have red beads for flowers.

The quilting is done over the cross stitch too. Not noticeable and keeps the cross stitched area flat.

The cross stitched square was frayed and sewn over the square piece of fabric after quilting it. It can be removed easily if desired.

When I was in college (forever ago) I bought a quilt kit that was cross stitch blocks. Don't remember how many blocks there were - are. It's still a WIP in hiding.

Thank you also. I would not have thought sizing. I think I will take each of my cross stitch and measure and square up the size I want since I always make them on larger areas so I have extra to cut off. *H*U*G*S*

The blocks I am wanting to do are like this only each one is different scenery I will have twelve of these when I am done.

Is that a Paula Vaughn? Absolutely beautiful!

debbieumphress 02-15-2011 07:23 AM

It is Paula Vaughn. NP3 was gracious enough to end me one of her books with the patterns. That is January month. I love her quilt themes. Now I have found a lot more of her patterns and books and I am goign to be busy. Can't wait until I have enough to do a quilt top. Thank you.

I have put cross stitched squares in quilts. Anything goes in my quilts. I've even used suede. It makes them unique to me!

The cross stitch designs are beautiful. I haven't ever seen them. I particularly love the sewing machine one. I have seen cross stitch in quilts and always liked them. I taught my children ( about thirty years ago) how to cross stitch. Your stitching is so beautiful, I'm sure your quits will be the same!!

roseOfsharon 02-15-2011 06:57 PM

I have two of Paula Vaughn cross stitch patterns. The Upstairs Sewing Room and Quilting Lessons. They are on my "to do" list!

Debbie, I love the two you have made thus far!

debbieumphress 02-16-2011 05:43 PM

I love sross stitching and any patterns with quilts in them. I would love to see others on here in the picture section. I guess you could google and find them or do ISO in teh classifieds. Other members hwo no longer cross stitch for one reason or another. Thank you for the comments, I love anything quilty.

Bobbielinks 02-16-2011 05:45 PM

You have received some great help. And some beautiful cross stitch pictures to look at. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Hope2quilt 02-16-2011 05:46 PM

I have a quilt that I am cross stitching the entire top. I plan to add pieced squares around the sides. I am clueless too how to quilt it but I understand that I do not want my quilting to take away from the cross stitch. When I get it closer to done, I will post it for suggestions and recommendations. That may be another six months. It is a sloooow process.

debbieumphress 02-16-2011 06:03 PM

Hope2quilt - I can't wait for you to share it. I have someone who said she sent it to a long arm quilter it did not affect the cross stitch. I think it would be wonderful. I am on a mission to finish the other 7 months. It is slow but so relaxing too. Time away and a break from quilting.

Hope2quilt 02-17-2011 08:46 AM

Debbie - yes it is relaxing. I am not a TV fan. So when my husband wants to just sit and watch TV or when my mother comes to visit, I sit and cross stitch.

RedGarnet222 02-17-2011 08:55 AM

Hi Debbie,
My suggestion is to stabilize the pieces before you set them as blocks by an light-weight iron on interfacing onto the back. That keeps them from bunching up and fraying when the quilt is washed.

Another suggestion is to look at the embroidered quilts at say bunnyhill. She uses quilt blocks with her designs and might give you an idea how to piece them in.

Hugs,
Red

debbieumphress 02-17-2011 09:36 PM

Thank you Redgarnett222 - YOu have turned out some beautiful embroidered blocks with that method and your work looks so clean and neat. I will give thsi a try. Might have to ask you again when we talk. Thanks for the advice.

jajudd24 02-17-2011 09:43 PM

Debbie those will make a beautiful Quilt..I want to see pictures when all done.....Great job!!!!

Thank you everyone. Jajudd24. I am about to wear out that wonderful shirt you sent me. YOur embroidery work is awesome. Please don't give up offereing them to the board. Not all of us can do it or have a place to buy them at your prices. You are a dear.

Now I can combine my love of quilting into my love of crossstitching.

My Forest Fairy for DD. It is small here but it is on her wall framed and is 28" x 30". WHen I could do more detail.
