Crown Royal bags
A friend has a large collection of Crown Royal bags. He has hinted that he would love to have a quilt made with them. So... if I volunteer for this project, what words of wisdom can you share? I sure don't want to cut up his bags and make a mess. Any advise or tips would be appreciated.

I have a stack of them also, the hardest part so far is trying to decide which pattern to use. If you check out pintrest, lots of quilts will come up.

She made 64 12" blocks for hers with a 4" border made from a purple grunge fabric so was about 104 x 104 |

Before you get too excited asking him to tell you how many he has. A lot to him may be 15 or it may be 50. It will help you decide on a full size quilt or a throw.

On 1/6/18 I posted a pic of my Crown Royal Quilt. I had 48 bags to work with. I washed my bags a couple of times before cutting them. I followed a You-tube video on cutting. Once the bags were cut apart, I heavily starched the pieces, and because I wanted squares, I used a 4.5 inch template. I cut plain squares also from the back. The side strips of the bags got sewed into longer strips that I used as a border. The bags are flannel like. I found them easy to work with. Starch is your friend! The fabric is "fuzzy" so I cleaned my bobbin area often. Some bags seemed thinner than others, so when I ran into that, I just doubled the squares up. I used regular quilting cottons for the contrasting squares. Was easy to do. Good luck!

I just finished one last spring but couldn’t upload it from my phone. Making a quilt from these bags is a great deal of work. Because it was a surprise gift from a relative to her son, I did all the work. Personally I would ask your friend to wash the bags with a color catcher twice. Dry in dryer. Cut the bags apart by the seam lines and don’t cut into fabric. Throw away the ties. I wanted to make stars with the words Crown Royal in the center so we took the really big bags and used the center logo for this. We made a template and cut them out exact. I found yellow flannel that was a good match and washed it. I cut up the smaller pieces for the star points and used the longer pieces for sashing. Matching the purple was very difficult but I found something suitable. It was a great deal of work but he was over the moon about it. He bought the bags over 20 years ago and she added more.

So glad to see this post! My husband has about 100 he has collected over the years and wants me to make him a CR quilt...well, needless to say, I'm not gonna make a quilt with 100+, that would be huge! I have just put a patriotic quilt on my quilting frame to start quilting and have several babies coming up to do quilts for, so maybe next winter I'll tackle this one!
