What sizes are crumb I have not work with them but have see them on the site. what size and what they are using them for?

bluteddi 04-30-2011 12:32 PM

I think personally, everybodies crumbs are different. but to me.... anything under 2 - 3 inches is a crumb

luvTooQuilt 04-30-2011 12:34 PM

I consider crumbs to be .5 inch to less than 2in sq..

and 3x3 up to less than a fq I consider scraps...

Everyone will be different as some can work with smaller sizes and others like me cant..

You can make crumbs in different sizes. The smaller they are the crumbier (is that a word?) they are. If you make them larger, say 12” then there are more strips and it doesn’t look as crumby.

Here is a tutorial from Izzy

Here is a link to large crumbs I made

Here is a picture of some 4” crumbs I made.

Thanks you for your help. I have been working with crumb for years and call them scrape. here is some of my crumb prog. I just finshed for my young es son and two I'm working on for christmas for two more of my sons. Again thank for the help.

I don't use any of these methods. I cut small squares of fabric and piece the scraps on those like piecing on paper. I just leave the fabric and the strange fabrics and odd seams are reinforced by the backing fabric.

I am allergic to dryer sheets, so what could I use instead?

sweetpea, I love your quilts!!! Thank you for sharing pictures. They are beautiful!!! I'm sure your son is loving his quilt and your other son's will be thrilled with theirs. It's always fun for me to look at all the different fabrics in crumbs and scrap quilts.

You could use muslin. QAYG is another way you could do this too.

lclang 05-01-2011 04:27 AM

I have a lot of scraps of white or very light fabrics that I use to cut the small backing squares. You can also use "ugly" fabrics that you wouldn't use for anything else. If they have dark prints just don't use them under white or very light colored fabrics. Old soft sheets work well too and make a ton of small blocks.

sweetpea 05-01-2011 05:18 AM

qzuslivz I have use week old new paper, parment paper, old sheets work well. I have roll of brown paper towels that are not cut that I have been work with for the small stuff with. I have read on here someone use coffee fillters, adding machine paper Qzuslivz you can use just about anything you like becuse you can take off or if you use fabric it will stay. Just have fun.

Here are the blocks I did for my Alzheimers tribute quilt for my FIL. It was the first time I tried a crumb type of quilt and it was very challenging but fun. The only thing is that my crumbs seemed to multiply and I have just as much as I did before I started.

My avatar quilt? Yes I have, I think it is posted in several spots on the board but I will post another one here if you like. And yes I love the scrappies but with running a Vintage sewing machine business I do not have any time (or room) to do any quilting. :(

But this is the one I did for my son who is autistic

Billy, I love it!! Thanks for posting it. That must have been a fun quilt to make. Well the quilts you did have time to make are beautiful!!

Look for the thread I started a looong time ago "Guy lets show the ladies out quilts" or something like that. There are some really nice quilts that us hairy leggers made :D

But getting back on the subject I do not think that there is any certain size for a crumb. For me it was trying to get rid of spare blocks and little scraps that I could not toss out.

Billy, your quilt is lovely. Looks really cozy and cheerful. Hope your son enjoys it.

Crumb blocks can be made of any kind of leftovers from other projects. You can make small blocks or larger ones. squares, triangles, any shape you like. The teeny pieces work well on corners. You are the artist, do what appeals to you.

Now I know what to do with al my scraps that are not cut into 2 and one half inch squares. someething else to make.

Until I got on this website, I thought crumbs were something left on the bread board!! Thanks so much for all the happy colourful ideas. Everyone's quilts are gorgeous! I am going to try this next, because it seems to be something you can take your time with - pick it up and put it down in between making traditional blocks. Love it.
