Curved Flying Geese - need help, please
 

I am trying to teach myself how to make a block with a strip of flying geese flowing across it. I have read many posts on the Board so I have posted a photo of my attempt. I drew my column of geese, pp them, cut the side pieces off - added 1/4" seam allowance - clipped the curves and sewed them on to the flying geese column. Now the problem. As you can see in the photo I had a real problem at the end where the geese are wider. Should I have started sewing those side seams on from that end or should I have added extra length to the side seams?

Thanks Auntpiggylpn, I read the link and still can't decide what my problem is, they didn't really address how to piece the side pieces. I've designed quilts using blocks designed by others but have never tried to design a block. Wish I could find a pattern the size and shape, it sure would be easier. Thanks for your suggestion.

You might have more success by cutting those fabrics attached to the geese section on the bias, instead of on grain. They'll stretch and ease into the curves better.

I would draw out the entire pattern full size. Cut apart the sections. Add 1/4" seam allowance to all of the sections and make patterns for them. Things should fall together but curves can be tricky. Your "whoosh" of geese looks great. And if you want a pattern you CAN make it!

Peckish, Thanks, I just didn't think about cutting the pieces on the bias, that may be the trick. I'm going to try that in just a little while. I see so many gorgeous quilts with these flying geese in the body of the quilt or the borders. I really, really, want to know how to make them.
