There is a pattern I love and stupidly have not ever taken a copy of where it looks as though curved lines are done, but it actually uses squares, HST's and triangles. Anyone know what I mean?

Happy day!

I've seen what you are talking about but don't remember the name- sorry :(

BellaBoo 12-12-2010 02:02 PM

Storm at Sea?

shequilts 12-12-2010 02:16 PM

It is indeed Storm at Sea. Beautiful quilt

craftybear 12-12-2010 02:21 PM

is this the block?

gale 12-12-2010 02:32 PM

That block is amazing but I've read that it's a challenging one. I go for the non-challenging right now. Even so, maybe a big single block pillow of it is in my future.

A little pricey indeed. Wonder if they would sell just the pattern?
Can't hurt to ask them.

jrhboxers 12-12-2010 05:07 PM

You can find the pattern on-line for free.

Just finished putting the binding on my storm at sea last night... loving it!
Quilt is for my our bed, wool and a cotton batting, nice and warm for WI winters!

I know I can get a block pattern for Storm at Sea, but I'm interested in the kit I posted the picture of. Don't think there would be a free pattern for that, is there?

Do you have electric quilt? If so you might be able to work it up in that.

I tried calling the shop and they had sold out of the kits. I don't think the girl I spoke to really knew anything about it. She kept telling me it was a free Moda pattern, but their kit listing mentions including a book and I can find nothing on the Moda site.

Is anyone else having any better luck finding this pattern - free or otherwise?

pdcakm 12-13-2010 01:06 PM

did search garden party +storm at sea and found a book called "a new light on storm at sea quilts" by wendy mathson. this might be the one but hard to tell if this specific pattern is included. looks like a good book though.

here is another called "Storm at Sea New Quilts from an Old Favorite" by barbara smith.

amazon has both books. sure would like to see inside the books. lol

Thanks, pd! What a fun way to preview a book! Now I'll look on Amazon. So many neat ways to use the block.

susiequilt 12-13-2010 01:29 PM

Someone found the book on sale for you and posted here:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-82520-1.htm

It was nativetexan and she found the book at big horn quilts.

Kitsie 12-13-2010 01:35 PM

That's it! Can't believe it! Anyone interested please go to "nativetexan's link! I'm going to buy it right now!

Susie, thank you!

susiequilt 12-13-2010 01:51 PM

Thanks go to nativetexan!
I love that quilt but I have so many things on the "to make list" I'd never get to it!
Please post as you make it.

Rosyhf 12-13-2010 02:01 PM

There are other patterns that appear to have curved lines. Kaleidoscopes come to mind. This was one of my first quilts - don't look too closely at the workmanship, but you can see the circles.

pdcakm 12-13-2010 11:09 PM

well, i waited all day, then came back to see how you all did finding the mystery pattern for the quilt. it is too gorgeous. don't know when i will get to make it but bought the book. of course, had to buy a couple more while i was at amazon. lol

thank you everyone who worked so hard on this. and a special thank you to kitsie for starting it all. can't wait to see you post your quilt.

redpurselady 12-14-2010 06:30 AM

I ordered one from Amazon too - it is a beautiful quilt!

That is GORGEOUS! Love the colors!

Seems we have two post going on this and many buyers of it! And I forgot to go to Amazon so paid a bunch more! However once again "The Board" found what I needed.
Should have a competition or form a group to show each others progress. Check back with me maybe very late next year!

Just received notice from Big Horn that they canceled my order! Someone got there first!
Happy dance - Amazon has it a lot cheaper! Thanks to all of you who took part in my quest!

pdcakm 12-14-2010 01:36 PM

congrats on your loss, kitsie. ha-ha. i like the idea about keeping track as we make these quilts. however, like you, mine will be 'later' next year too.

It's an oldie-but-goodie, found in many books, usually under the name kaleidoscope (an older form of kaleidoscope, not the stack-and-whack or OBW). Color placement is the key. The corners are light, and the darks are in different positions in the two blocks that make up the quilt. It looks good as a scrappy quilt. I designed my own borders, based on the kaleidoscope block. The block is in the public domain. I found pictures of quilts using it in Encyclopedia of Classic Quilt Patterns, Big Book of Scrap Quilts, and Color From the Heart. Eleanor Burns and Marti Michell also have books that feature the pattern, and Marti Michell has rulers that can be used. You probably don't need to buy a pattern though. The trick is getting the corners on straight. When I made mine I was pretty new at quilting, and I didn't like that part. I was still in the mode of trying to fix mistakes later on in the process, rather than catching them as they occur. Much harder that way, LOL.

That's too bad, kitsie!
:-D :-D :-D :-D

pdcakm 12-15-2010 12:37 AM

thanks for the info dunster. i could tell it wasn't stack-n-whack but couldn't place it beyond that. back in my early days i was too intimidated to even pay attention to anything that appeared too difficult. now i will try anything once and some things twice. tee-hee.

i too remember the "i'll deal with it later" mode. try not to do that too often now. ha-ha.

susiequilt 12-16-2010 01:48 PM

I had ordered this book from amazon on the 13th and it arrived today! Just like new condition. Funny but I picked a seller that is only about a half hour from me!
It's an amazing quilt. We will have to have a sew along when we get around to doing it.
You wonder what they think at amazon when there is a run on a certain book. I think there as many listed now as before we all bought but the cheaper ones are gone. It's still a great buy for $4.98.

Kitsie 12-23-2010 02:29 PM

Well, the service was great as usual, the book is really good and has some very beautiful patterns BUT the one we all like is
88 1/2" x 66"!! I wasn't looking to make a bed quilt!

It would be just a bear to make smaller, so I may just make a section of it. Or if I can adapt it to freezer paper piecing I could maybe reduce the size.

I got my book from Amazon yesterday. It has several quilts that are now on my to do list. Great book! Thanks for finding it.

I made the attached with a variation of kaleidoscope and another block. It looks like it has curves too.
