I have an Alvin mat that I purchased online. It is thicker than my omnigrid and has two sides. I love it and it was cheaper than a smaller sized olfa or omnigrid.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. Yes, my blade was dull - I learned an expensive lesson.

The cuts that are too deep to heal are made by putting too much pressure on the rotary cutter. If the blade won't cut four layers without much pressure it's time for a new blade. If a mat gets a lot of use it has to be replaced just like a dull blade. I think quilters get use to the used mat and don't realize how much easier a new mat will make their cutting job. A mat is not a one time purchase.
....and after using only the hard blue ones since I started quilting, DH got me a self healing mat for my birthday. The difference is amazing! No more croked cuts because the fabric doesn't slide as I cut! Who knew? I will say if you are going to invest in one, get a double sided for twice the useable surface. I have seen black and green, but mine is pink and blue.
