Cutting backgroun squares for applique
 

Since my last posted BooBoo, I am ready to cut my squares for the F&P Flip Flop quilt pattern. I was always told that you cut your square slightly larger before appliqueing, then trim when finished. I have done very little applique over the years I have quilted. The pattern says to cut background squares 8.5"x10", Should I cut them as stated or add 1/4"?? I received a few extra inches from the Fabric Shack because that was the end of the bolt. Here are most of my Flip Flops waiting patiently to be fused onto their background. THANKS

When I do machine applique, I always cut my square a bit bigger. It allows me to fudge things around if I don't have the applique on the background exactly square and when using the satin stitch, things seem to shrink just a bit.

I would cut at least 1/2" bigger in both directions than the unfinished block size. The applique can shrink the block unevenly.

I agree-I have done a lot of machine appliqué and always cut the background a little bigger so it can be sized properly when the appliqué is finished.

I usually add 1" to the measurements. So, if I want a cut size of 8.5x10, I would initially cut my squares 9.5x11. If you don't have enough fabric to do that, add as much as you can.

That is what I do also -- before doing your applique be sure to mark the center of each side -- you can do that by basting a line for an inch on each side. Then when it comes time to square up your block you know where the center should be. Hope that makes sense.

Why not give yourself at least 1/2" to 1" or more. The reason being is that if your appliqué is not centered perfectly, you have the opportunity to do so when cutting the square to the correct size.

Yeah, I always cut a bit larger too. 1/2 inch or so. I've had an applique that wasn't centered exactly right and ended trimming more one side than the other.
