I prefer self healing - they seem to last longer to me.

So glad you asked this Susan .
I,m new to quilting and got a greening cutting board 3 quilts ago .
It,s called a Hobby cutting board. And now I,m thinking its the board and not me as I have really bad cut marks on the board and was thinking it was me doing it .
Nice to see every one saying there,s last a long time . I guess i,ll go out and get a name brand self heeling cutting board this time . Not some thing from Taiwan .
That will teach me you get what you pay for.
Have a good day everyone

I have used several kinds but my by far favorite is Martelli. It is heavy duty, heat nor cold does not bother it (you can even press on it, which I don't do), it is both sided (purple on one side and yellow on the other), marked well, self healing, etc., etc. They are a little pricey but well worth it. Also love their rotary cutters. You can check the out on line at Martelli.com , they are out of Florida.

I use only the self healing.

I just replaced my hard blue type with a self-healing mat. The difference was unbelievable! I have always had a hard blue one and never knew how much easier it is to be accurate, when the mat has no slippage. I will never buy another hard blue one.

Self Healing Olfa mats for me! I have 3 of them, one of them is about 20 years old, is a little marked up but still works great, the other 2 are 8 or 9 yrs old and in almost like-new condition. Keep them clean, store them flat and they will last a long long time. Helpful hint for all self healing mats: I use a gum eraser to get any little threads out of the cuts between the times that I wash them.
