Cutting Fabric

Hello,

I plan on practicing sewing blocks using the book, "Quilts, Quilts, Quilts" as a guide. I'm assuming when cutting the fabric, the instructions have included the quarter inch seam allowance. But I just want to make sure. Would anybody know? Would all quilting books already include seam allowances for cutting instructions?

Thank You,

Allison

As a rule, yes. The only exception would be for applique. Usually those patterns are the sewing line.

It depends on the author. Check for a finished block size in the book and draw it out on paper if you are not sure.

if the book has (cutting instructions) those will have the correct cutting sizes....including the seam allowance.

If you are talking about Quilts! Quilts! Quilts! The Complete Guide to Quiltmaking by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes, then yes, the seam allowances are included in this book. Reading through each pattern, it clearly states if there are templates to use (they are in the back of the book, with the seam allowances on the template) or the blocks/patterns state the sizes of strips or squares, etc. to cut, and those include the 1/2" seam allowance. Possible there is something in there that missed the seam allowance, but I didn't find any.
I found this book very thorough and it has a ton of info on learning blocks and designing and measurements, etc. etc.
This is one of the first books I picked up and learned more precise directions from.
Have fun!
