Cutting issue
I was prepping my FQ for a turning twenty quilt when I took a phone call. After measuring the material twice before the cut, it never occurred to me that I switched my rotary in my other hand. : ( So, I no longer have the 6 1/2 x 10 1/2 piece.
I am wondering if it would be noticeable to sew the two sections together to achieve my 6 1/2 x 10 1/2 width. How many of you would do this to make it work? I can't believe I did this to my beautiful fabric! |
who is going to know your mistake, other than you ???
You've got my permission! :o
I would do it. As Deborahlees said, "Who is going to know....."
I would piece fabric if I loved it and wanted it in the quilt. I would try to make the seam as transparent as possible (ie: line up and sew using the "repeat" if it is a print). Since you have such a small amount in a fat quarter this might not be possible. Antique quilts quite often have fabrics that are stitched together to make a large enough piece of fabric. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.
I piece together like fabric all the time for patchwork. You paid for it, use it how you wish. I think it also makes a quilt more interesting and personal. anyone can buy and put together perfect fabric ;)
I made that or a yellow brick road and had washed my fat qtrs. that meant at least one wasn't the size needed for cuts on the pattern. i had to make do. it worked well for me. I was needing 2 1/2 inch cuts and didn't have enough, so i sewed two different color strips together to make the strips needed. looked planned.
I had one border on the quilt top I am working on now that I pieced. All my blocks were done except the last one as I was short one of the fabrics. It was a mottled burgundy fabric and I pieced it together. The seam is almost invisible and I am going to make sure I put a quilting line through the join to further disguise it. Unless your quilt is going to be judged, I would piece it. Some judges frown on a piece fabric, some not.

I'd do it. Or should I say I have done it. ;)

Of course, I have done it.
If you look at grandma's quilts, even small pieces would have been joined. No scrap waisted. When your quilt is done, that imperfection will never be noticed. |
I've done it! As in my "enough pink" quilt I posted awhile back. That was a Turning Twenty Again pattern. I bet my GD will never notice!
I'm going to try piecing it together and see how it goes. It is three pieces and I have the same fabric to piece to it. They are mostly dark, so I will let you know how it goes.
Crazy quilts even have intentionally pieced patches. Go ahead and do it.
I've done it, in fact, just today. I pieced together five small strips to make a 4.5 " block...bad girl, bad girl! BUt what else are you supposed to do? Didn't have anything else in my stash that I wanted to part with...and this doesn't look bad at all!
I've done it on commissioned quilts. No biggie.

Just call it being "creative".
if there isn't any other way choice I'd do it.
Just put that pieced block on the side and it will be less noticeable. Your quilt your rules. I have pieced a setting triangle because I cut it diagonally with the squares wrong sides together. They are not the same. I just make a bigger seam and press it open, less noticeable that way.
I have several sashing strips pieced on the quilt that's being finished now. I cut some 8" strips when I needed 8 1/2". I preferred to piece them rather than buy more fabric. It doesn't show.
Well, I did it, and it looks great! You can't tell that I made a mistake and pieced them together a foot back. Thanks for the encouragement ladies! Sometimes I forget there are really no "quilt police".
Glad it worked out for you! I have done it many times, and it has never been a problem.

what mistake? - I thought you planned that!!
I've learned the hard way to stop cutting/sewing when on the phone! Glad it all worked out. I haven't been that lucky.

Just do it!
I would do it without a second thought. Once a quilt is all together and quilted, the seams just kind of disappear, anyway, overshadowed by the quilting. Let's remember what quilting once was... resourcefulness, not perfection.

It will work fine. I have cut things short and had to piece them to get it to work.
I did than on a Irsh chain block once. I cut the remainder sides the same and sewed them back togeather then cut them the right way. Making a block in a block. Instead of hiding it I put it in the middle and it looked like I intended to do that. I knew if I trid to hide it a coner it would like a mistake. It turned out pretty good.
I did a Turning Twenty and made cutting mistakes. Peiced the blocks, then cut to the right size. Not a problum and when I get it quilted who will know, only me...and the rest of you on this thread! LOL!
Gotta say - been there, done that! I was making a Triple Irish Chain and mis-cut for a couple of the blocks. I didn't have enough fabric, so I pieced it together. I think I have a couple of blocks in that quilt where I had to piece one particular fabric to get what I needed. Only I know it is there, and I look at is as a "where's Waldo" type thing.
I say go for it!!! Use the fabric you love, it will be wonderful in the end. |
I thought I was the only one who did that. I accidentally cut too small and after "freaking out", I sew the pieces together and open the seams and get on with the quilt. I'm always muttering under my breath about how stupid I was about what I did, but I always seem to do it again. Usually I just stop after I miscut and sit there and think really hard hoping I can undo my mistake, but I've never been able to undo it. I do a lot of cussing and that makes me feel better. Hee hee
I just did this myself. Making a rail fence quilt and cut one strip piece an inch short. Sewed it back together, no problem. After its quilted nobody will know but me...and now all of you, but that's ok! Lol
I have several old quilts and they all have pieced blocks. Not a problem. Who do you know that inspects a quilt? [Other than the quilt inspectors].ha, And they don't turn them down if you let them sleep on them. I'm trying to be funny. In reality, no one would notice and if they did they would know it was intentially made that way.
I took the Turning Twenty class and someone made the same mistake. The instructor told us she did the same thing. We all stood there looking at her quilt and didn't find her mistake until she pointed it out so by all means sew them together! No one will know unless you point it out.
A lot depends on the kind of quilting as well as how busy the fabric is. It will probably be hard to detect in the finished quilt, unless it's solid colors and a very regular design of quilting or SID. I would say go for it, unless you are making it for a paying customer or for competition.
Perfect solution!
We won't tell if you don't! LOL
