cutting plexiglass for templates. who does this

I am wanting to cut some plexiglass for some of my traceable templates in my magazines does anyone know who will do this or had this done ? Seems like I read this somewhere on the board but can't find it now

FroggyinTexas 03-24-2015 03:30 PM

The local glass company--the folks who repair broken windows, install plate glass, etc. In my town, that's Binswanger Mirror and Glass. Look in the yellow pages under glass repair, mirror and glass, etc. froggyintexas

Also Home Depot and Lowes. anyone who sells plexivglass, Michaels, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby ect. try them

cakebaker 03-24-2015 03:38 PM

We live by a small town and the owner of our local hardware store has made templates for me.

QuiltnNan 03-24-2015 03:56 PM

i got mine done at ace hardware

sophia 03-24-2015 04:13 PM

thank you all will be calling around tomorrow

Feathers-N-Fur 03-24-2015 05:36 PM

My Ace hardware will only do square shares, nothing more complicated. So I bought a scroll saw off Craigslist, but haven't tried it yet.

Check with a glass shop. I asked at Ace hardware & Home Depot. Both sent me to the glass shop. I did need to make a cardboard template for them to trace.I used a Priority Mail box that was waiting for recycle. Probably thicker than needed but it worked. I got 8-9 templates for around $40.

redneckwoman 03-25-2015 03:10 AM

I had my cut at our glass shop. The ones that dose glass repair

dakotamaid 03-25-2015 03:45 AM

Be sure and tell who ever is cutting to be exact!! I had some done once that were just a bit off and we quilters know what results from that!!

Joset 03-25-2015 04:17 AM

my local hardware store also does it.

ManiacQuilter2 03-25-2015 05:07 AM

Make sure they do it accurately !!

LindaR 03-25-2015 05:38 AM

my local hardware did it for me, they have glass service so have the machine...did 32 of them one time for a class I taught $1/piece which I thought was nice of them LOL

Had my small town glass co do ONE for me......way more expensive that I have purchased...AND, unfortunately not done accurately! Lost a guild of potential customers here.....so just be aware!!!!!!

Onebyone 03-25-2015 06:31 AM

Be sure they are laser cut. That won't be a problem as all glass shops have laser cutting now. If not find another one. Laser cutting is much cheaper but still costly as some shops will charge the same labor costs per hour. I would buy the templates if available in the size you want. The quality will be better.
Lowe's here sells pexiglass but will not cut it. The manager said there was no one trained to do it and none of the employees wanted to learn how to do it. ?

AliKat 03-25-2015 07:45 AM

I go to a local plastics company where they fabricate items for businesses and such. They cut very accurately and the edges are smooth. What they don't do is put any writing/lines on the acrylic. They do have different thicknesses too. I believer they will work even with a phone or mail order, though I haven't tried this as they are so near where I live.

sophia 03-25-2015 10:50 AM

OK ladies yea I called around and also called binswanger I told them I had my own plexiglass and they wanted to know how many cuts in one template i said 3 as it is the wedge. quoted me the price of 10.00 so I guess I will just purchase one on line I was just trying to save a few bucks but I guess you learn as you go ant nothing cheap about our hobby and our quilting LOL us quilters just have to have what we want to complete our task. haha thats what I tell my hubby and he believes me so ALL IS GOOD PLUS LIFE IS GOOD thank you all I really appreciate all of you and know you all will come to the rescue of a quilter in need

ssuzz 03-25-2015 12:15 PM

my son cuts mine ..just cut with scroll saw and sand down the edges a bit.

quilt1950 03-25-2015 12:23 PM

DH cut mine on the table saw. He says anything that will cut wood will cut plexiglass. Leave the protective film on the plexiglass until you are finished. Don't go so fast that it chips, and don't go so slow that the plexiglass melts. He sanded the edges a bit when he was finished. What he has made is very accurate.

tessagin 03-25-2015 12:41 PM

I just buy them. By the time I can get anyone around to cut them, I can order and have them delivered or just pick them up and back home in 30 minutes. Dh hates working with anything but wood.

In a past job we used to have custom acrylic work done by a company called TAP Plastics and they impressed me with their speed and how nicely made the stuff was (we bought sign holders, some stencils for spray painting, some custom cubby-boxes...kind of random stuff). They are a west coast company only though as far as I know.

They happen to have a shop about 6 blocks from my house and I keep thinking I'll stop in some day and see how much they'd charge to make templates. They can make pretty much anything you want out of acrylic sheets and I think they'd do a great job. Not sure how much it'd cost though...I'm guessing not very cheap. But I could be wrong!

My husband cuts mine with his laser engraver.

dorismae904 03-26-2015 05:11 AM

I was/am making placemats for my church to distribute to our local Meals on Wheels program. We need 500. Made the fronts from 7inch squares, not all of them were really square. I went to a local glass place and had them cut a 12 1/2 x 18 piece of plexiglass for a back template and a 7 inch square. $20. This was cut from the thicker sheet. We used sheets to cut the backings and it saved a lot of time. Haven't had ant irregular shapes yet but will stress accuracy.

nwm50 03-26-2015 05:20 AM

A neighbor had small pieces of plexiglass not thick but just right for templates and offered to cut a few that I needed, he also sanded down the sides for smoothness. He has quite a few tools that he loves to play with, keeps him busy making or repairing things!

sewvic 03-26-2015 12:46 PM

I have Plexiglas (aka acrylic) cut at my local Ace Hardware all the time. I give them the measurements or a paper pattern of the template I want and they usually do it while I wait. If is relatively inexpensive. I originally did this to be sure I was cutting machine embroidered pieces straight and even. I draw an X on the template and line up the center of the X with the center of my embroidered piece. I like it for applique quilt blocks too. I am a big fan of hardware store templates. If you are especially clever and have the right tools, you could cut your own. BTW, I have them cut from 1/8 inch thick acrylic.

Rose Bagwell 03-26-2015 01:50 PM

I just had one done for me at a local glass co. where they do glass, plexiglass windows, etc. Shop around as some will do it and some won't. I suggest you make an extra copy for you and add the 1/4 "to the measurements before you take it to the glass cutter. Mind turn out just find it was an extra large dresden plate. He charged me $10.00

IBQUILTIN 03-26-2015 07:22 PM

We usually go to the Glass Company here, and did you know that plexy makes good templates as well?

craftymatt2 03-28-2015 08:27 AM

This may or may not help some, When my son was in college, he did architecture and is now a architect, they have a machine that cuts plexiglass, they put all the measurements in the computer and will put lines and measurements on the plexiglass, then they get cut. My son did this for me, he made me tons, he had a lot of leftover pieces to do this. So im thinking if you go to the local college, maybe they will do it for you. Good Luck
