Another option - instead of running sashing down the entire quilt, sash each block individually. This makes keeping the blocks lined up SO much easier.

For instance - in this quilt, I sewed short strips of the pale pink fabric to each block, then sewed all the blocks together.

I don't like obvious seams in my borders or sashing so depending on the fabric I will do lengthwise.

WOF is so much easier to cut, and I don't mind diagonal joins in the borders because they'll disappear once quilted. If it's absolutely necessary because of a directional pattern, then I'll do LOF but that's been extremely rare for me.
