My DH made me the leg extenders with water pipe that he put the wide flange on the bottom so it is more sturdy when I cut. It is great!

I used a rolling serving cart from Lowe's, and my huband took PVC pipe to go into the uprights & attached pvc to a plywood top for mu Quilt Cut-2. Perfect height & I can easily move it to a new location since it is on wheels. PM me & I'll send some pix, if interested.

Whenever I have used the bed, I find that it's not good. It is not solid enough, there is too much give and makes it difficult to cut correctly. Marge L. |
I also bought the bed risers from Bed, Bath & Beyond I think it was less than 10 bucks, I used it for my sewing table too!

I use bed risers.

I use bed risers.

I also use the bed raisers from Bed, Bath & Beyond. I used their coupon and purchased them for $7. They do have two different sizes. For me this is wonderful.

O.K. Don't laugh. My husband went to the post office and got some boxes (you don't have to pay for them until you mail them, which we won't); put them together, and put them on top of my dining room table, with a cutting board on top of them. Worked perfect for me. I think there must be different size boxes. You can then take them apart when you're done until the next time.

We recently retired and are spending most of the year at our cottage in Michigan. The upstairs is all one open room, that will become my sewing room/guest room. It is big!! I was going to buy a large old table and use the pvc pipes or buy bed risers to put on the legs. But my husband stopped at the local Big Lots store and came home to tell me that there was a perfect cutting table there. My friend and I went up to take a look. It is awesome. It is a really large, square, bistro table - just the perfect height for cutting, pinning, basting etc. It was $100.00, and my friend had a 20% off coupon, so I now possess the best cutting table I've ever seen. Love it, and will now always look at Big Lots for things that I might need.

I bought a table at Joanne's. I attached a picture here. When closed, the two fold down section are long enough to almost reach the floor leaving a 20 inch middle section, like a side board. you can push it up against a wall and it doesn't take up much space at all. It's not perfect, I've had it for a number of years and it is getting a little wobbly, but it is a perfect hight for me, and gives me the space I need when and where I need it.

Yes, you can use the bed risers to raise your table up.
|
Yes, that is what I have been using...keeps table high so that you are not bent over.
|
I have a very sturdy ironing board and pruchased a "homemade" top for it. The top is made from plywood and there were adjustable slots on the under side to fit various size ironing boards and to keep it from sliding around. I also saw recently that JoAnns had a cutting table that had the extra heighth. There were drawers under neath and one end look as though there was a small pressing area. I'm sure it is one of those things that is "assembly required". I think the sales price was $199.00

I use my pooltable with a pingpong top on it to sandwich my quilts and also as a cutting table. It works real well.

My table sits on bed risers and it's great!

I am lucky, I inherited this old ugly handmade tall table, my husband used to fix T.V. on. I then bought the large 58" cutting mat and placed it on top. My table even has a box in back where I can plug in light, sharpener, etc. Yes ,I am very lucky in that respect . The table is 35.5 inches from the floor.

I have a dining room table in my sewing room that I bought a thrift shop

I agree with the PVC pipe. I put coasters under the legs to keep it from scratching the floor. Works great

I have a most wonderful cutting area. I don't have a separate sewing room, but my bedroom is quite a good size. Five years ago, I had my son get me a hollow, unfinished door, without the hand hole cut into it. I have that resting, against a wall, on top of an old computer desk, the kind that would have the top part added to it. It stays there great, no wobble ever. This is a desk without that top part. I also bought that huge cutting mat from Joann's, when they still offered 50% off of notions, and looks like it was made for the door. It is absolutely the best cutting table ever. I found an article about using the door on two saw horses, in a magazine. You can use whatever you want to place the door on, just so it is stable and is a good height for you. You just can't imagine what a joy it is to cut on this set up and, the door is not overly heavy to move,if necessary. Also, at the far right end I have my sewing machine set up, by a wonderful window, with a wonderful view. Oh yes, and it is awesome for pinning quilts too. Clamps work so nicely around the edges of the door.

Bed and Bath have the risers that work wonders. Height is much better and your back doesn't ache.
|
I use an old desk.
|
I either use my kitchen table or the counters. The counters are a perfect height for me also but I have cut many articles of clothing on my table and it does work if I need a larger area than the counter.
|
I live in a motorhome & use my stovetop covered with my mats. It's about 15" x 18". Not optimal, but it's all I've got.
|
I have a cutting table that is high but sometimes I use our breakfast bar which isn't bad
|
I use the bed risers from Bed. Bath, & Beyond and I use an adjustable stool to sit on...can't stand alot some days...so this works perfectly for me...Naomi

But standing is so much more accurate for me, if a bit more painful. Because I'm only 5'3" a regular height table works just fine for a while. I can't stand much longer than "a while" anyway. When I used to stand for long periods, I made 'risers' for my foldup table from PVC pipe (the stiff, white, plumbing stuff). They can be cut any length to fit over the legs and I put cane rubbers on the bottoms of the legs to keep them steady. Jan in VA |
My best friend as those leg raisers and they work wonderful! I have used her table.
|
My thanks to everyone for some great ideas. I have a coupon for Bed, Bath and Beyond so I am going to try the bed risers - it that doesn't do the trick them we will move on to the PVC pipe. You guys are a great help!!
|
I started out using the breakfast bar because it is even higher than my kitchen counters. But now I have a huge table that sits above the guest daybed (my sewing room doubles as a guest room). I bought a large cutting mat at Joanne's that covers the majority of the table, then a smaller mat that covers the rest. I love it!

my friend uses those cups to raise her table they seem to to workout
|
The bed risers work perfectly. We use them on our cutting table at church where we do our prayer quilts. I use my dining room table for cutting at home, with a mat
of course. Doris1334 |

I use my kitchen/diningroom counter and it is the perfect height for me.

interesting variety of cutting places. mine is the top of the dryer. i am tall and it works fine, the cutting matt stays there. my sewing table is a large laminated door ?? well it has a hole in one end, maybe it was a computer table, 10$ at the 'restore' place. i clear it off when i want to layer and baste a quilt (i save them up and do a few at a time_)
we raise this table with pvc pipes and it is perfect. |
