I am new to quilting. If a pattern says you need a 4 1/2" square, does that mean you cut it 5" so you will have the 1/4" sewing area. Thanks. I really enjoy reading everything on this board but have never seen this question asked.

Most patterns account for the 1/4" seam allowance--unless it is applique--then you need to add it.

No, you cut it 4 1/2"" so it is 4" finished size. UNLESS the pattern says to add seam allowance. Some of the old patterns do not have the seam allowance added. Just read it carefully to see.Ask me how I learned that one! :>(

Patterns allow for the 1/4" seam allowance. So, cut it at the 4 1/2".
Applique is a little different. You need to make allowance when you are doing applique.

Hope this helps and isn't confusing.

We are doing a BOM right now that my friends and I agree has horrid directions. Evidently the contract with he LQS states the LQS may not alter the directions! So, I'm cutting the pieces of the block each a hair larger and then trimming them after I assemble each section. Did suggest the LQS give us handouts on 'other ways to make___' in the future [wink, wink.]

Usually pattern makers allow for the seam allowance.

Thanks for all your help. I will be able to confidently cut the material now. I was just scared I was going to mess it up
