cutting strips...how many, what size

I have 29 10"blocks. I want to frame each block with a strip 2 1/2" wide. How long do I cut the strips to frame all the blocks? I don't do math, that is why I am asking. TY:)

what is the layout? are any of the blocks sharing a frame? Sketch the entire layout with the finished boarder, take a picture and upload it so we can see.

I don't like to do math, either, that's one of the reasons I use patterns:) I'm sure someone here will be happy to tell you though.

Do you want to frame each block before putting them together? So you end up with 4" between blocks when they are sewn together? Or do you want a 2" strip of sashing between blocks when they are all sewn together? Makes a difference.

I'm assuming you want a frame all the way around the block. Cut two strips 2.5" x 10", and attach them to opposite sides of the 10" square (blue strips in diagram below). Then cut two strips 2.5" x 14", and attach them to the top and bottom (green strips in the diagram). You will end up with a block 14x14" (13.5 x 13.5" finished).

For the non math oriented: (to make it look like the picture above) Use the sew and trim method:
1) Side Frames: Pick a strip longer than the block. Sew it to the Left side. Trim anything longer than the block. Repeat for Right side of block. Press.
2) Top/Bottom Frames: Pick a strip longer than the top edge of the block with the left and right frame attached. Sew it to the top (which is now the left frame edge, the top block edge, and the right frame edge) . Trim anything longer than the sewing line. Press. Repeat for Bottom Edge.

How about strip piecing/sewing the sides, then cut them apart? Then do the same for the tops and bottoms? If you want two blocks to share the same sashing, them only strip sew every other one.

This is why I love my EQ7 program. Yes, it over estimates the fabric calculation but it is better than trying to add up all those strips.

Jennifer23's description of how to do it was perfect...but cut the strips 14 1/2", not 14". Block will finish at 14" when blocks are sewn together. My question. How will you lay it out for 29 blocks? If you have 5 blocks wide by 6 blocks length, you will need 30 blocks. It will make a 70" x 84" finished quilt.

Isn't QUILTINGBOARD amazing! It even does math!

tessagin 06-16-2016 06:44 AM

Was wondering the same about the 29 blocks!

I agree, this board and it's members are amazing! My favorite place each morning with a cup of coffee.

Could not agree more, as I sit here with my coffee!

My math agrees with Jennifer23, that the strips would be 14", not 14 1/2".

By my calculations, the block will end up at 13.5 inches. The original block ends up being 9.5 because of the seams, and the two 2.5 in strips end up being 2 inches each. That makes the finished block 13.5.
So the last two strips are cut at 14 inches.

You are so right. 👍😊

So to answer the original question: Cut 58 10 inch strips and 58 14 inch strips.

Thanks Quilting Chris. It is so easy to get carried away and forget what the original question was.

Roughly all round strip will be 21/2" by 49" based on : 2 stripes at 10" for sides and 2 stripes at 141/2".( I'm confused as to exact size of the centre is it 10" or 101/2" if the later add 1/2" to the 10" sides. ) total, 20" plus 29" equals 49".
