This may seem like a silly question. How do I measure for something that's wider than my ruler/cutting board. IE, I need 8" strips for my pillowcases. My ruler is only 6" wide. What nifty little trick am I missing? :)

ALthough you aren't supposed to, I use the lines on my cutting board and I've never had a problem.

Fold the fabric in half and cut 4"

If it is bigger than your cutting board, I would mark it with chalk and a tape measure then draw a line with your cutting board. If you don't have many use shears or move it over and just use your cutting board and ruler with rotary cutter. Good Luck!

My answer is completely different. Buy a wider ruler! I'm not as clever as the others :D

some use two rulers. sliding an extra ruler over two more inches adn cutting, and then moving the extra ruler up as you cut to maintain a straight cut.

You can use two rulers side by side, or I have an Omnigrip 8 1/2" x 24".

You are my kinda gal!! ;)

I almost always use two rulers, one to measure across, the other one to measure down.

There are a few tricks to it, but you can, if very careful, fold the fabric and get it aligned straight, and cut the folded material in such a way as to get a really straight strip out of it.

I have terrible luck cutting larger fabric pieces. The June Taylor Shape Cut ruler is worth buying. JoAnn's, online if a store is not close to you, using a coupon will be the best place to buy one. Get the largest size you can afford.

I think you need a tape measure :)

I like it!! Where do you all get your coupons? Does JoAnn's have coupons you can use on their website? I live at least 60 miles from the closest one.

Yes, you can use them online. I signed up for them at the store, but there is probably a way to do it online, too. I will warn you that I does take them time to process the request.
