D4P Fabric
 

I am certain that someone here can answer this simple math question, but I don't have a clue. I want to make a twin size D4P for a friend and cannot find out how much fabric I need for it. I would like to make it out of 2 background fabrics and 2 oriental prints. All I can find online is how to make the patch out of charm packs, but I don't want to use a charm pack. Help, please! :confused:

What size squares are you going to cut?

And how big do you want the twin size quilt to be?

I'd like the blocks to be 8.5", so I'm guessing the squares will be 5" each, and I want to make it big enough to be a large throw. My friend is about 5'6" tall, but is a big person. I want her to be able to cover herself comfortably, which is why I was thinking of a twin instead of a throw. But, a large throw would be ok, too. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for your assistance!

Very rough calculation to make twin long quilt 39 by 80 would be 30 inches per fabric. Personally I would buy a yard. Somebody else will bring a better result . I was working on 5 inch squares. And size 40 by 80.

No it would definitely have to be wider than 39". A twin BED is only 39" wide. When I make a twin quilt, it is about 60" wide, allowing about 10" drop on each side. If you want a larger throw, I would make it at least 48" x80'. So, you would need (6 blocks across x 8 blocks down) 48 blocks.

If you go by the charm pack size (5 inch squares) you should get 8 squares out of one width of the fabric, so you would need 6 widths to cut 48 squares. If you are using 4 different fabrics, a yard of each should suffice. But that does not include binding fabric.

I just saw a cute twist on D4P at http://round22.blogspot.ca/2012/07/d...ith-twist.html and at the end she gave the measurements needed for the original blocks which I found very helpful.

Thanks, GingerK. That's exactly the information I was looking for! I'll post a pic when it's done, but first I have to get the fabric! I also like the pattern you included I your post, but for this one, I'm going to stick with the plain D4P. I think it will suit my friend better. :) I can always count on someone on this wonderful Board to come up with the answer to my question! Thanks everyone!
