Do you think a D9P looks better with 3, 4, or 5 fabrics. What do u think makes prettier pattern?Started out with idea to do D9P scrappy but think fewer fabrics better?

I like it with 3 fabrics or if with more fabrics, keeping the center &/or the cross pieces the same.

I have not done one yet, had one planned for a baby quilt but used a different pattern. The link I found said to use a number that is a factor of nine, like 3,6,9. I don't see where this exactly holds true as one of my favorites from this board was done with 4 fabrics. I say find the group of fabrics you like and the placement that appeals to you, and go for it! This is my favorite of all the ones I have seen so far. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-76729-1.htm

I made a King size D9P and while I love it, I think I used too many fabrics. I used around 10 or so. I used Moda Charm Packs and they have a lot of different fabrics in them
I'd go with 3 or 4. It's such a fun pattern! I'll do another one sometime :) |
I don't like using more than 3 or you lose the continuity of the design.

I made a D9P from fat quarters

I've done it with 4 and like it so I will stick to 3 or 4 for the most part. I always keep the small squares and the rectangles the same :)

I am making one from charm packs that may have too many colors - Moda's Fandango. I did keep the centers the same and will probably use sashing between the blocks so it may turn out okay. I keep telling myself that this daughter likes color. I will start cutting the blocks up tomorrow. This is my first even semi scrappy quilt.
If I were to start over, I'd use four large prints for the corners and in the center a single strong color with the four that become bars a lighter single color or quiet print color. |

I think I used about a dozen different fabrics in this, but only 3 colors. It's still a WIP. I was trimming down the points on the edges and trimmed a block too soon. I was so upset with myself that I put it aside. I hope to soon rip out and replace the ones I cut wrong.
I am also working on this Safari quilt. The cat squares are panels that I cut up and used for the outer corners of the 9 patch. I like to keep the center square consistent in color and keep a color value the same for the other blocks (all darker for corners or all lighter for corners, etc.) D9P - black, white, turquoise Safari Cats |
I haven't seen a D9P that wasn't charming, even the ones that were totally scrappy. As long as the centre square is consistent, (I like it dark) you will be fine. I think Katier825's black, white and turquoise quilt is absolutely wonderful and she has used a lot more than three fabrics. Setting it on point and adding sashing and cornerstones just adds another great design element. Have fun with this one.
