I want to do a D9 patch and the block to end up 12.5 and for the life of me I can't figure out the math,I know there are alot of smart quilters out there so if someone would give me the numbers I would be so grateful.(I have been in the hosp. 3 times this week and am on medications.I can usually figure this stuff out but I am foggy right now)! If you want the unfinished block to end up 12.5 inches square after you've cut it and resewn it, this is what will work:

I've attached the drawing. It does require three different sized pieces.

If you want to make all the squares the same size, 4-2/3 inch squares will work. 4.67 inches.

5/8 = 0.625
3/4 = 0.725

to arrive at the 4-2/3 inch answer:

if one starts out with nine 4-1/2 inch blocks, and sews with a 1/4 inch seam - the size should be 12-1/2 inches

When the block is cut and re-sewn, one loses 1/2 inch both ways, so then the unfinished block size is 12 inches.

3 time 4-1/2 is 13-1/2 inches. We need to add 1/2 inch to that to make up for that seam - so that would be 14 inches

now we need to divide 14 inches by 3

= 4-2/3 inch squares

(if you cut 4-3/4 squares and sew and resew them together - it will be only a tiny bit overly big - you can always trim the block down to size - it would probably only be a sliver from each side)

Okay, I don't think you want your C block to be 5.5 by 5 or it won't fit. The 4 B blocks are 4.5 by 5, but there isn't a way to get those to fit around a 5.5 by 5 inch block. So the C block should be 5 by 5 not 5.5 by 5

You are absolutely correct!

The C BLOCK SHOULD BE 5 x 5 if you want to try that cutting plan.

thanks for the correction. i was planning on making this block...i'm new to quilting and have learned so much on this site...i'm one who will attempt something without reading directions and then when i've screwed up royally, i go back and read..i did my first quilt this way and it taught me the hard way to make sure i do 1/4"....and now i study the blocks ....i have done 5 quilts...so proud....i wish i would of started years ago...

Disappearing 9 Pacth. You start out with a 9 pacth block cut it in half both ways, then rotate the resulting squares to move the the fabric around so it no longer looks like a 9 patch. You can do a search on this board to find lots of posts that talk about it, and how to make one.
