D9P Negative/Positive Blocks
 

When doing a D9P do you make a dark block and a light block using the light and dark fabrics like you do if you are making a regular 9 patch. Does it matter in the finished product? I have searched and I can only find how it shows to cut the 9 patch into squares but does not mention how to do the blocks dark/light. Thanks

It's really your choice, and the effect/look that you want to make!

Always remember, there are no rules ...... it's all up to you and your creativity.

I think it depends on what part of the block you want to stand out. If the center blocks are dark and the corners light, the center will be predominate. If the corners are dark and centers light, the corner pieces will be the most visible. I worked on one at quilt quild today that was scrappy with bright colors in all the positions and it was lovely.

I don't think it matters, but I do like a strong color for rthe center block - the one that turns up as small squares after cutting.

I made one, it is in the gallery of quilts on this board. I just used the colors I wanted and made them the way I wanted them. Just a matter of how you want to do them.

I used a dark block in the center then medium on the four corners and light for the rest. The lights get cut in half and the dark gets cut into forths.

I agree...you can make a small (2" blocks) sample to see what you like best. I have done with three fabrics or many. Love D9P

Since I can never follow the pattern or rules in general I just sort of wing it. I'm working on one now and when I sterted assembling it I didn't think there was enough contrast so I'm not certain if it really is a D9P now but I think it's interesting so...
