D9P Question
I have read cutting directions for D9P but my question is sometimes there is a main color, such as a red, and I can't figure out how to lay out the pieces so that piece of red is always in the same spot of each block. I hope you understand what I mean. Of all the directions/videos I have seen, none address that question.

It would be the center block in the middle of the square.

Or it could be the top centre, middle left and right, and bottom centre. It all depends on what effect you want the D9P to have after you chop it all up. |
That is a good video, why not make 3 with the suggestions above and decide what you like.
Worst case, you will love all of them and have to make 3 quilts. I don't see a down side. LOL. Good luck Mik |
The "MAIN" fabric is the one that doesn't get cut. It remains its full size and it is placed in the four corners. You cut 4.
The "SECONDARY" fabric is the one that gets cut in half. It fits between the previously placed main units along the edge. You cut 4. The "CENTER" fabric is the one that gets cut into fourth. It is the one you see the least of and it is often the "pop" fabric. It fits in the center. You only cut 1. Hope that helps. Edit: Forgot to mention that you need to pay attention with the main fabric if it is directional. You need to swap out diagonal corners rather than turn the blocks. |
Thank you Tallchick for the link to that video. She explains and shows exactly how to do it.
I made a couple 5 or 6 years ago and forgot exactly how the cutting went. I need to make more. |
This is a neat page on how to do a D9P with a layer cake. http://reannalilydesigns.com/2013/10...h-layer-cakes/

In the link shown she uses a black middle square. It should be something that gets your attention, and not a large print. I used a bright yellow in mine, and then when I did the Double Disappearing 9-Patch, I used another yellow of just a little different shade. |

How many times have we heard/read here on the QB?... your quilt, your rules! There are so many possibilities, if one does not succumb to the norms in quilt-life. For the D9P there are so many variables possible ... Some of the prettiest have been when there has been no set pattern as to what colour/fabric/print is where. Yes, just IMHO! |
