D9P variations?
 

Has anyone made blocks using the nine patch format and instead of just cutting through the 2 centres, cut across the diagonal and possibly more?
I am going to experiment shortly, when I get a window of opportunity, to do something different to see what happens. Probably be a disaster but "nothing ventured nothing gained".
I would appreciate your thoughts and experience.

when you cut for d9p, you get squares that can be rotated to make other patterns. if you cut a 9p on the diagonals there's only one way to rotate... with the original outside corners now in the middle. i've not done it yet, but it could be interesting. try it and share a pic with us :)

Craftsy had a free printable download with various ways to cut a four patch or nine patch. You could cut out the paper shapes and play with the design.

I have be experimenting with a since D9P set on point. I just don't have enough fabrics to make more blocks and can't find those soft antique peach and aqua prints anywhere anymore.

I recent saw this she changes it up by the placement of squares in the original 9 patch and then on placment after cutting.

She does two cuts on the diagonal. Interesting.

I had the same thought a couple of years ago, wondering about different ways of doing a D9P, so I colored graph paper into 9-patches, cut them up and played around with them. Didn't really care much for any of the resulting designs, so I ditched the idea. But that's just me. :)

I thank you all very much for your information. I will, as suggested, try chopping the blocks with the few left over from my table runner and see what happens. I like the cross diagonal cut but I fancy doing more deconstruction and reassembly as well as that. I will post the results if successful and maybe the failures too so we can learn! You may be right Peckish and I could be disappointed in the end.

Oh no! I wasn't trying to discourage you, I was trying to illustrate how you can audition different ways of cutting and assembling the block using graph paper instead of fabric. Much less work that way. :)

This is a great series of ideas. I tend to be a very "linear" quilter. I'm going to use these ideas to "mix-it-up." Thanks for posting your ideas.
