I own a Janome 6500P and have had it for nearly two years. I must admit that in general I am very happy with it. It is a work horse and has been "worked" !! The machine came with a 1/4" foot that has a guide along which you guide the fabric. This most definately does not produce a 1/4" seam, more like 3/8"!!

I have limped along with changing needle positions etc to get that dang 1/4" seam. Even had my husband, Bob, remove the guide thingy. All to no avail. SIGH! Then I had a brain wave, a real light bulb moment. What if I buy another brand's 1/4" foot? The Brother is very similar, they have snap on, snap off feet- hmmm maybe I will try one of those. So of to Spotlight I go and go to the sewing machine feet section. I found the Brother 1/4" foot, checked that I would be able to return it if it did not work and took it home.

Voila!! It fits, and most importantly IT WORKS!! The foot enables me to sew a scant 1/4" seam with ease. Once I press the seam, my seam is a perfect 1/4"!! Happy Dance!! And the cost of this miraculous foot, $16 Australian. Heaps better than the $50+ of other "name" brands.

The only problem now is that even tho' I have all the feet etc that I could possibly wabnt/need for the Janome, I am thinking about getting a new Pfaff QE 4.0 or Bernina 440 QE. Oh the pain of having to go thru' getting all the bits and pieces again.

how funny, i have a 1600 dp and 2 memory crafts and i did not know their was such a thing as a 1/4 foot i have the same problem!! my 1/4 is a good (or maybe not a good guess) since they are all crooked and i have to bend over backwards to make them straight i can put 3 squares together and they bow
so i trim till they are the wrong size. i give up.!!! have any ideas?

I have the 6600 and got the Acufeed 1/4" foot which I piece with. If I set the needle at 6.5 I get the perfect scant. I also find the Acufeed action keeps the two pieces in line, especially great for piecing long strips. I'm sorry you had trouble with yours.

I'm actually picking up my 6600 this morning and have been reading up on everything before I do. On the Janome site there are tips and one of them is for adjusting the needle to I believe its 5.5 (please go to site to make sure) and it then is 1/4". I also read that you can save this adjusment for basically 1 touch sewing.

You got it, that Brother 1/4 inch foot is the most accurate I have ever used. The one for my Husqvarna machine is "off" and I have to adjust needle each time 0.3 and drat if I forget to do it.

The Bernina has a 1/4 inch foot to buy - I like the one without the guide, and it's accurate for me. Pluse they are very easy to change. Disadvantage might be that they seem to be unique to Bernina, so no others will fit, though you can do it if you buy a different shank first. Having said that, I wouldn't part with either of my Berninas, I love them to bits.

Yup that's true - I'm just too lazy to read the manual and see how to do it. Every time I switch on and then have to click the needle over, I say to myself, 'oh yeah, Kathryn, save this into memory' then I forget! :lol: The needle position of 6.5 is for the Acufeed 1/4" foot which I bought as an extra because it came with the needle plate with the smaller hole - (I wanted that for FMQ) not the regular 1/4" foot that is supplied with the machine - that is at 5.5, you're absolutely right! :D

I love the brother 1/4 in foot!1 it works so great, and my seams are 1/4 for the first time I think LOL

I'm going to have my dealer program it for me!!!!! :lol: :lol:

My Juki TL98QE has a compensating foot that makes a perfect 1/4" seam, and it is so easy. It comes with this foot, straight foot, walking foot, and darning foot - for stipple quilting. I have a newer of this machine as a back up. They are identical.
